Bonfire Night 'is a disaster'

710ths
An MP has warned the public not to light fires in their gardens this weekend, branding Bonfire Night "an environmental disaster".

In the wake of the Stern report, Labour's Barry Sheerman said people had to recognise the connection between their actions and the planet's future.

He said: "Too many people will pussyfoot around because they think it's part of their heritage to have a bonfire in the back garden and burn a Catholic on it.

"But this weekend there will be more dioxins and more carbon put into the atmosphere than much of industry puts in the rest of year. It is a cataclysmic disaster.

"If people this weekend can give up the bonfire and just enjoy fireworks instead, that will make a big difference. Or go to a community bonfire rather than having individual ones."

But a spokesman for the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the impact of bonfires on global warming was "negligible".

Mr Sheerman, the MP for Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said he realised that a total ban was impractical but said action was vital.(Source NTLWorld News http://www.ntlworld.com/news/story_uk.php?page_zone=150.7.1&storyid=337942

In my opinion the sale of fireworks to the general public should be banded. I personally like firework displays they are much safer and under control by professional. Why should some crazy kids get their hands on them and potentially hurt other people. I'm afraid the risk in todays world is just too great. Once again, the few irresponsibel spoil it for the rest. So organised displays are the only alternative...lets keep our heritage...does anyone remember what we are celbrating on the 5th November?

Lets get this in prospective, industry burns 24/7 all around the world.
November the 5th lasts for the most two weeks (because sales of fireworks lasts to long).
Then, one or two volcanoes spew enough crap to last 20 years!

When will people realise it's the latest 'in thing' and a good way to blame the general public instead of governments not getting to grips with the fact they rely on industry for their funding?

Makes me sick.

Let's just ban everything.

Your dead right otiscom, governments always blame someone else for the problems, and the public is an easy target.

The modern world is becoming a right pain in the ass. I'm glad I was around to enjoy a bit of freedom in my younger days because there sure isn't much left anymore.

I'm evangelistic myself, but still I do not approve of such behavior.

Yeah, I just read an article about someone who lit a firecracker in their "buttocks" in London in celebration of ... erm, Bonfire Night?

But I'm slightly confused - why would you celebrate the day someone plotted to blow up your government?

Uh, I am taking a wild guess at this, it is because they didn't blow it up.
