Stones guitarist will not face smoking fine

Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones’ guitarist, has been cleared of flouting Scotland’s non-smoking rules by lighting up onstage, after council officials confirmed that the stage on which the Stones were performing was not considered an enclosed public place.
The group was playing a gig on 25 August 2006 at Glasgow’s open-air Hampden Park national stadium where observers noticed that he smoked on stage throughout the performance.
The band is currently performing the UK leg of its A Bigger Bang world tour.
However, environmental health officers at Glasgow City Council confirmed that the stage at Hampden Park did not fall within the restrictions and that Keith Richards would not be fined £50.
Scotland’s ban on smoking in public places came into effect on 26 March 2006.
