We had some security upgrades and apparantly some ftp programs aren't working anymore. The temporary solution is to use filezilla: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ . I will try to fix the ftp-problems, but it might take a few days/weeks.
If you use flashftp, try to change to active mode.

1.Settings to connect to frihost
Go to file --> Site Manager
Click on New Site
Fill in:
Host: yoursubdomain.frihost.net or yourdomain.com/.net/.info
Port: 21
ServerType: FTP
Logontype: Normal
User: your cpanel username
Password: your cpanel password
2.Editing/Viewing files
Edit --> Settings --> Interface Settings --> File Viewing/Editing
And then select your program. (eg: C:\WINDOWS\notepad.exe )

Seems to be no problem with Dreamweaver FTP after updates.

Thanks so much, this helped me tons! I can finally get onto my site, lol.Just as a little FYI to everyone.
As far as I can tell, and I have done some pretty extensive testing on this. All FTP clietns will work as long as PASSIVE mods is not enabled and ACTIVE mode is.
I may be wrong, but I have tried , well, a lot and they all work when switch over from PASSIVE to ACTIVE.
CoffeeCup Free FTP works when you do that and so does alot more.
I cant figure out how to change to active mode with smart FTP, any help?
Hmm...FileZilla's the FTP program that doesn't work.
EDIT: It does work on Active mode.
ACEftp doesn't work.
All you have to do is enable PASSIVE mode. But then you won't be able to see .htaccess files

And you won't be able to upload.

At quickconnect bar, you type as below :

yep, its easier to use and works ok tyhi, i use smart FTP, and i can't connect to my FTP using "ftp.mydomain" as adress, passive or acctive i cant access to the ftp 
But if i use the ip of the server as adress, i can't connect in passive, but in acctive mode yes, i can...

I´ve always used FlashFXP, but it doesn´t wokr (it connect, but don´t show my files), now I will download FileZilla to see if it works...

I have the same problem... i can't update my site... is it fixed yet? i tried filezilla and it works somehow, but yet, i miss using flashfxp, i'm already used to this ftp program.
any chance to fix this problem? or shall we stay that way forever?

Yes, it's going to change like this. By the way, flashxp does work on some computers. I think maka uses it.FileZilla has stoped working!! I could use it before but now it's just as the other ftp-programs I've used: "Could not retrieve directory listing". I finally fixed the filezilla problems I had. By default it was connecting fine, but it was having trouble randomly uploading/downloading files. When I explicity made it in active mode, the random problems don't show up.
Edit: nevermind... now it's having problems again.
I don't know what to say ... I use filezilla and aceftp without a single problem. It should be working.

I use WS-FTP from Ipswitch and works fine with passive mode disabled.
Also have CuteFTp but i didnt try.I think WS-FTP is the best for me.

Everyone will say something different. I, myself, use filezilla http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ and I never had a single problem with it.can someone tell me that there is some progress with the ftp problem because i cant get in with any ftp software...

You need to switch of passive mode. It's something like "PASV" that you have to uncheck.I got this when connecting through SmartFTP:

That's definately weird.
I tested at least 3 ftp programs and they all work for me. I have no idea why so much people have problems with it.i have tested 3 ftp programs with result 2 failed and 1 works :
not working : filezilla & absoluteftp
working : wsftp
i don't know what's up with the server. i hope someone would fix it.

hey someone help me. Does getting a connection on ftp have anything to do with what type of internet connection you have? Coz, i'm using wireless broadband and i have FileZilla. I've set all the settings given by this thread but i still can't get a connection!
Also, i just got my new account here and i haven't done anything to the FTP manager. Am i supposed to set up an account in cpanel?
according to me, any ftp program works.. I tried several and they al worked. CoffeCup FTP, Core FTP, and some programs in Dutch worked all without problems or mallfunctions :lol: .. anyway, perhaps it is so that other people experience trouble, I don't 8) cyou

well i am new , just got my account finalized today and have not yet been able to ftp. I came looking for support and figured I should share my info.
Set up ftp on server 2 for my frih site and my main.com that I am having them host.
Could not log into either ftp after creation. Was getting 530 error. So I waited a few hours and came back, and the ftp accounts that I created are now gone. Sweet!
Created new ftp accounts once again. I am now able to log (meaning I dont get the 530 error) but I get.....

in both firefox, explorer and my secure file transfer client times out as well. I am able to access my website and online control panle (directadmin). But, I am not able to connect to my account using ftp client (filezilla). Here is the error I get:-

Hmmm....still trying for figure this out.
FileZilla and CoreFTP give me the same results, but straight, text-based FTP from the command line works fine.
What I am seeing is that the GUI versions ARE logging in okay, but the failure occurs when they try to do their initial directory listing. The "ls" and "dir" commands do work from the text-based FTP, however.
So far, I've looked at dozens of Google results regarding the issue, but only one actually had anything to do with the directory listing: | Quote: |

After reading that, I tried making sure FileZilla and CoreFTP had a default, remote directory set ("/public_html"). The command to change directories DID work, but the directory listing after that still failed.
Thus, I will continue searching, or maybe someone else will have better luck.
EDIT: GOT IT! Among the may ways in which Micro$oft have crippled their version of the command-line FTP is that it does not offer passive mode. THAT was the difference between using it versus the GUI programs. Once I turned off passive mode (or turned on active mode, depending upon the particular program), FTP worked fine.
Thus, until further notice, be sure NOT to use passive mode for FTP on Server 2. Maybe you could help me out here. I have been trying to connect all day but cant seem to get it going.
Here's what I am doing so just tell me where I am going wrong.
Set up ftp at directadmin site under ftpmanager

only 2x I have gotten to a blank ftp page that has absolutely no files or folders on the screen.

The problem is that Firefox, in its native, unmodified condition, only uses passive mode and, as I just mentioned about, you must NOT be using passive mode.
If you still wish to handle FTP from within Firefox, instead of with a separate, external program, install the FireFTP extension. When you created the connection for your FriHost account, be sure passive mode is NOT CHECKED. I just tried that, and it worked fine.
Since that resolves both the general and specific FTP problems addressed in this thread, I am marking it as -closed-
Just remember, everyone: DO NOT USE PASSIVE MODE FOR FTP TO YOUR FRIHOST ACCOUNT.
