Virtual Reality

osbits
Imagien watching film, but with video goggles that go around the sides of our heads too. so that we can see an image all around us like in real life. We do not watch the film from a distance. we are in it! The film, of course, is a computer image. The goggles are sensitive to the movement of our heads: the image moves when we turn our heads as it does in the real world. Built-in earphones also change the direction that sounds seem to come from as we move past objects. Gloves that can expand to put pressure on our fingers allow us to fell that we are touching objects that in the virtual environment. All this already exisits, so what is new?
As computer programs get faster and vore detailed, much more will be possible. We already have flight simulators for training poliots, but programs will be develo0ped for training in almost anything. We will be able to meet friends or colleagues in virtual environments: luxury conference rooms, exotic landscapes, vitrual art galleries or impossible fantasy spaces. Imageine treating phobias by allowing people to meet their fears inn a virtual, harmless world. Doctors will be able to attend operations thousands of miles away, and when robot arms are developed, they will be able to actually take part in the operations. This type of remote expertise will be available to many professions.
But there is more. Experts believe that, sooner or later, the techonology will be developed to allow us to link computers directly into the brain. then everything will be possible: sights, sounds, touch, smells, tastes, even emotions. It is even suggested that we can go futher still, and input memories to create completely new virtual identities. We can become whoever we want to be. We could have a whole catalogue of parallel lives and personalities. The possibilities are truly endless.

That's right. I'm one of those who are working on immersive virtual relatity. My organization hopes to wire computer signals directly into the nervous system at the very lowest part of the brain stem.

We currently don't know enough about how the nervous system works or have enough computing power to generate interactive sumulations that way, but we could record and playback segments of sensations with little more than existing technology, and that is our immidiate goal.

I think the ideas behind this are really interesting, but also potentially very dangerous. As with most science/technology, the possibilities are virtually endless in both positive and negative directions. but I mean, think about the dangers of being able to control everything a person senses, once we figure out how to do it with wires, how long before we can do it wirelessly (hasn't that been the pattern of the rest of technology). My greatest congratulations and encouragements to ocalhoun for his organization's efforts toward their goal, I think the benefits would be amazing. But I just hope that eventually society will learn where the potential dangers come to outweigh the benefits.

Society will never learn when the dangers outweigh the benefits:
Examples:
-Nuclear weapons
-Firearms
-Automobiles (A lot less people died in car accidents before it's invention)
-Space Travel (How many people have died going to space? And what have we gained from it?)

Perhaps you believe our society is improving, but I'm inclined to think the opposite.

Its true. But I think the only way that the only way that our race may achieve great things is to gamble on such. Like war, it is bad but it accelerated the development of some like communication and travel.

Virtual reality depicted in movies is much like a goal to us since we would want to improve user immersion. For good or bad, there are still benefits.

sounds like u have just watch James Bond's movie........................but in computer field it is being tried from last 15 to 17 years and now there are equipments by which we can draw images on monitor by our thinking......

it is just starting so there wouldn't be so much things as in movies
