am I affected by a WORM?

Isuspect that m ycomputer is affected by some worm. I dont have any good antivirus but can any pne tell me how I can find if my suspicion is true?

An assuming that I am, tell me what are the possible sources.

Is it possible to get affted by a worm just by connecting to the internet? I mean to say without downloading anything explicitly?

1. step: Download Avast (its free and possibly the best antivirus program there is!)

2. step: Run the boot-time scan!

..that will tell you whether you have a virus, worm, or anything similar.

It is possible to get a worm just by connecting to the internet, but more unlikely than being hit by lightning 2 times in one minute.

The main sources of viruses are opening dodgy emails, getting files from friends/people who are infected, going on dodgy porn sites* and downloading anything illegal (including serials).


*) = dont worry - even porn sites dont give you viruses - use good judgement thought - if it doesnt seem somewhat classy, you may be in for a treat.

Step 2: Install Lavasoft Ad-aware
Step 3: Install Webroot Spy Sweeper
Step 4: Run full system scan in all programs
Step 5: You can be sure that you don't have worms anymore on your computer Wink

Getting infected by any type of malicious codes only by connecting to the net is a very common problem if you have not any personal wirewall. If you connect to the net, you must have an Antivirus, Antispywre and Adware and a firewall besides the default wirewall which ships with the windows O/S(if you are using one).
Norton is the best antivirus of this time. You can download it for free use for 6 months whith Google pack softwares http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?nopers
Windows defender http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx and Lavasoft SE Personal http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php are good free antispyware and antiadware programs. The best personal free firewall program I used is Zone Alarm basic firewall http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zaav
Try these programs and you will be able to fix the problems and protect your computer from further problems.

Can you see anything unusual with your system, If yes your PC might be infected.

install symantec antivirus... i think it is good antivirus and also nod32 is good one...

to product your system from virus install any one of the antivirus, if you not updated your operating system(windows) you will experience a serious problems, and no antivurs help you... so first update your operating system it is the main point, by this your can free from many virus.. before you update your system check service pack that you have installed or not... then update your system...

Is norton antivirus recommended ??

There is one time whereby my computer is affected by worm and the norton antivirus quratine the worm resulting in the worm to multiply itself to an amazing size (200+) but however it did not remove it... only latter i manually remove it... any comment Question

As for your question, yes.
solution: download some antivirus programs and keep up to date with the windows updates. find one that is free or try to find a way to make your trial version of a downloaded program registered, either by paying or else Wink I recommand kaspersky internet security 6, which can sweep most of the worms. Also sometimes malicious romoval tools are helpful, like spybot s &d, with which you can remove some spywares which maybe you might mistake for worms.

I personally wont recommend Norton, because firstly, it uses truckloads of memory from mi experience. If you want a good antivirus, try Nod32 or Kaspersky. Kaspersky has a large virus signature database. If you dont want to spend money on antivirus software, try Avast.
