Java Downloads

I do not know much about Java. I am going to reformat my HD again this week. These are the downloads I see on my computer. I don't know if there is newer stuff. I am trying to figure out if I need all of the files below, just one or something else newer:

j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p-iftw
j2sdk-1_4_2_12-windows-i586-p-iftw
javaws-1_0_1_02-win-us-rt
jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p-iftw
jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p-iftw

This is the original Java Runtime Environment (JRE) that you will have installed. You need this for stuff like Java Applets to run.

This is the Java Software Development Kit (SDK). You probably won't need this unless you plan on using advanced Java apps or programming in Java.

These will be updates to your original Java install. Just go to http://www.sun.com/java/ and download the latest version of JRE and it should keep updated.

Oddly, when I choose the free downloads, this page leads me to a runtime environment 6: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

However, I do not believe this is really the latest version. When I put jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p-iftw in google it takes me to the following page: https://sdlc5b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=02C6E977C9900C919D47253B250F0A54

It's possibly a beta or other pre-release. To be safe, I would use the one on the main page and it'll update automatically if there is a new version available.

I have been told go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html you will get 1_5_0_9 and that's all you need
