Microsoft to allow one Vista transfer under new license

Microsoft Corp. is limiting the number of machines to which users can transfer Windows Vista licenses as part of licensing changes the company has made to its Windows client operating system.

When Windows Vista is available, consumers will be able to transfer the operating system license they purchase to only one machine other than the one for which they originally bought Vista, said Shanen Boettcher, a Windows general manager at Microsoft. He said Microsoft thought the change made sense because "lifetimes for PCs are getting longer." Most likely, a user will not need to transfer an operating system license to more than one computer during the time that operating system is the latest one available, Boettcher said.

Funny that Microsoft talks about lifetimes for PC getting longer. The reason why they're so short is that they bring out bloated software which requires a PC with higher specifications to run it. They've had delays for Vista...

It's interesting actually. My laptop which dual boots into both XP and Debian Linux still runs fine on Linux, but Windows has gradually been grinding to a halt. Over time, the registry becomes bloated with a million useless entries, xyz piece of software doesn't unistall correctly and it's hard to keep everything up to date. On Linux all I do is tell it to update to the latest copy - it goes away to the web finds the copies of all the software and installs them, free and fast. It's a much better way of keeping all the latest security patches and features... and if you compare my computer today between Windows and Linux - Linux still runs like greased lightening. Windows has sadly become a dog. I guess this is the point where most people would tell me to buy a new computer and a new version of Windows... and of course I can copy Debian to as many computers as I want, free from worry about restrictive Windows licences.

What amazes me is Microsoft's ability to sell something before it's finished. Now, if you or me tried to sell some software we were in the process of making, nobody would buy it.

Buy our software! We should be finshed making it by next spring! Probably! It'll be better than our previous software!
^My great 'vista' sales pitch.
