I was wondering what everyone thought when it comes to choosing between scripts for a website like HTML or making the website in flash and using actionscript. I like actionscript and its visual style of programming as opposed to typical web design using just text and some image files to create a website. You'll notice there aren’t options for other languages such as Java or PHP. When I say HTML I am referring to all internet programming languages.

I am into web designing since 2001. I have designed many sites and I always prefer HTML and Images. HTML sites are easy to upload and fast enough as compare to Flash websites. Though flash sites are very attractive but are heavy.

ya even i think the same

HTML are fast to load and better

Flash is much more attractive but takes lot of time to load

however i prefer html for such works

Definitely html and flash.

Html is the real content and stuff and flash is used sparingly to enhance the site. Together they make the perfect match.

depends on type of site but for me I prefer HTML with images (nicely compressed images) so the load would be faster

for Flash if you do actual page in flash its better to use the professional flash suites because many they just make over-bloated pages and I hate to wait a page to load over 30 seconds i.e. limiting factor Webserver itself

I used to have flash in html but i think i dropped most of because it doesn't have actual function but just to look pretty but you can have actual function if you like to

small attractive sites:
Flash is perfect but I hate pages for flash 9 only like http://www.zero7.co.uk/ . There is no stable flash 9 for linux. I don't know what is on this page Sad

huge sites:
Html with images and some flash parts (animated logo, ads, navigation, ...)

there are also web pages in flash, that are very good and i like browsing them

Flash is more capable tecchnology, but it's harder than simple HTML.
And HTML is simple... and that's all about HTML.

Flash is inaccessible, slow, and evil.
Using Flash for a website to display text is just as bad as using TABLEs in HTML for layout.
Why tables for layout is stupid.

I am no big fan of Flash either , but lately more and more customers are asking for grafic-rich designs and animations on their websites.
They usually change their mind when i explain them that Flash isn't crawled by spiders and they will have a hard time ranking in Search Engines.

Most of the time i limit myself with flash-design at the banner in the header section and sometimes the navigation menu ( thou i preffer CSS pop-out menus ).

As for Flash programming, it's quite easy to build database-driven applications in flash , and it doesn't require that much AS knowledge as one may think.
You can use PHP scrips with Flash using the getURL function , think of the action="" attribute in the form tag.
Laying out your "forms" in Flash actually gives your application a much more professional look since you have so much more grafical control.

This is kind of a difficult poll.

For animation purposes, or even for streaming movies, I tend to prefer flash...unless I can get away with a simple animated gif or something. Flash generally looks the same on multiple platforms, etc...so that's a definate plus. However, the problem arises as some of the posters have indicated in the "heavyness" of the flash platform. So for me, if I've got no real need for flash (e.g. can do it with CSS, a simple javascript, etc...) then I won't use it. I do like it for banner design though.

So I think the two go hand-in-hand and it depends on what your development goals are for the page you're designing.

Cheers

It really depends on what you use flash for. If you use it for a splash screen, I'd say it's stupid but if you use it for a menu or header, I'd say it's perfect. No one wants to watch some animation then the Enter Site button appears, it's wasting time.

Flash may look cool but in the web the faster the page will load is better.
fizzo
Yeah! The much faster page to load is better. But some including some of my friends wants a different kind of Page something with animation and a techy type of site.

It's HTML/CSS etc for me (I'll call it Traditinal Methods).

Flash sites are visually nice to look at, but take longer to load, and can be a little off-putting at times. Also, I know you need a site to visually pleasing, which can be achieved using traditional methods, the one of the most important thing about a website is content.

When a visitor comes to your site, the first impression is very important, and flash can help achieve this in a great way. But it's the content and easy of use of a site that will keep people coming back. If somebody has to wait over 10 seconds for every page to load, they will just go elsewhere and not come back.

Sites built using traditional methods also appeal to the users of older computers and people with security restrictions.

Flash certainly has it's place, and should certainly be used for certain types of sites, such as multimedia companies etc

i do prefer html and flash...

If it is a commercial site...like selling or what...it is better to have it in flash because it will be so attractive to the visitors of the site...

But if it is an educational, government etc....just stick to html...there is no need of magnificent animated pictures, text or images...

Use HTML on most of your site, and use flash sparingly since flash is not friendly toward crawlers and the blind. You need to find a balance between the two. IBM is a good example of this.

i prefer to use html and images .... easy to upload... and fast rendering ....... specially if you're using css...........

I think that both technologies, HTML and Flash, are useful, when necessary.

For just simply displaying text and some images, HTML is the better way. But if I need some kind of interactivity, Flash is the best choice for me. If a Flashplayer is installed on the target computer, the interactions will work, unlike to the combination HTML/Javascript (different browsers!).

I'm using flash and html, but my use of flash has seriously been decremented. Normally I used flash for making menus, photogallery etc... but since I'm analysing the statistics, I realised that not enough people are flash enabled to make such a menu... I now use html in combination with javascript to create my menus. Just banners and some little animations are made in flash, because they are not that important and it doesn't give flash disabled people a problem...
