Ok this "tutorial" will cover practically everything from-nothing-to-complete-access.. ftp clients, setting up the client, using the client, working on the server via ftp .
gonna be adding more as things start pushing along.. questions/comments are welcomed.
Getting Started:
1st up, after doing this for awhile now, i've found my own preference, and choose to recommend everyone else to use a real FTP Client programme for all your ftp needs. there's the method of just using your windows and typing the url into the address bar, like instead of "C:\Programs\blabla", you put in "ftp://username:password@111.1.22.3:444" and work from there. But somehow, the changes you make dont seem to be 'realtime' and updated, and u find yourself in situations like seeing doubles of the same file (ie. config.txt & config.txt), and it gets messy after.
So, go grab an FTP Client, i personally enjoy using WS_FTP Pro, if you do a google search, other hot clients include Filezilla and BulletproofFTP (BPFTP).
Here's links to the mentioned clients:
> SmartFTP
> FileZilla
> BPFTP
> Ipswitch's WS_FTP Professional
Mac users
> Cyberduck FTP (Handyman)
> SecureFTP (Handyman)
Setting Up the FTP Client:
okay now that you've gotten your hands on a client, you need to configure it actually connects to the server. From here on out, the client i'll be referencing would be WS_FTP, my client of choice...but what you need to learn/know is basically applicable for any ftp client.
When you launch your client, there should be entry fields like:
- "URL" / "Address" / "IP"
- "Login" / "Username"
- "Password"
- "Port"
Your server provider will have the info you need, and they probably already listed the needed info in an email they sent to you, or else just contact your server provider for the ftp details.
Input the info accordingly (server's url or IP, username and password) into the client. The Port field can be left as the default value (i think it's normally 21) or enter in the port number if stated/given by the server provider.
After entering in the login info, clik the client's "Connect" button and it should connect. A tab will open with the server's name/title labelled (SmartFTP) so you can simultaneously access and manage several servers. I like the tabbed "browsing", and WS_FTP saves every server's connection info each time you close out the program, making it really easy to come back later and just get down in the mud.
