Since there were too many new threads cropping up every day about which is the best CMS editor, I'm creating a new official sticky on your favourite or best CMS.

Please do not create new threads asking for advice on which CMS is the best. If you'd like a poll, put in a reply in this thread about which CMS editors you think are the most popular, and send me a PM, I'll edit this post and put the poll in.

PhpNuke has the best templates and looks good, but it is not very good with organising the content (at least for me).
e107 in funny because on the footer is a default message e107 recommends firefox". The funny thing is that firefox is the only browser that can't load the e107 properly.
Now I’m using drupal...hope it won't disappoint me.

I added the poll now... don't forget to PM me to remind me to update the poll if you want to add any more CMS to the lists.
WickedGravity
I have tried all of them save e107, so i think i shall and post my opinions here when i have taken a really good look at it in browser, and played around with the raw code a smidge.

I think Joomla now is the best for someone with a little knowledge in CMS script. Just upload it to your server and install. You can add your site with add ons: components or modules. You want to make website like magazine? Search the template in Joomlaos.de or other url. Want a shopping site, a weather site, etc, just search it. Hundreds (may be thousands?) third components provided by the community.

Other cms may be better (Typo3, Drupal, and off course commercial cms) but hundreds add ons? I like this cms. This is the best for me.
kucomp
Some CMS that I have used were: Joomla, Dragonfly CMS, TikiWiki and phpNuke.

Out of all of those, I prefer Dragonfly. It's similar to phpNuke but contains much more nice features such as a integrated phpBB forum (it's even included with the main package), better security and it's faster than phpNuke.

However, for a more professional type of CMS, I would choose TikiWiki. It's a wiki platform and also a CMS. Contains a lot of features.

Though , not in the list , WORDPRESS is the best CMS , i have found and is is the best for starter and middleman sites .

And this link is a must watch pals .

I think that PHP Nuke Platinum (Future Nuke) is the best Web Site Software and best CMS ever made!!

By far SiteFrame or Coranto are my faves.

My favourite CMS is Joomla! for build site and Wordpress for blog, portfolio etc. Smile

BLOG:CMS rocks as hell! I've been usin WordPress but compared to BLOG:CMS WP looks really poor Very Happy

You forgot Textpattern. It is great for all kinds of websites, and it is easy to understand (once you get it). You don't need to know any programming to design a template for you site (as Joomla does), and there's a great community to help you, and lots of plugins.

To me, it's almost a sister of Wordpress.
v3rt1go
I've been using BLOG CMS for a while but i noticed that making blogs with WordPress has one huge advantage : Google indexes sites that contain WP made blogs like crazy.
As for website CMS i like e107 , since in my opinion has the best online support.
incubus
what about typo3 ? it's one of the biggest - and not on you list ?
is it not used outside of europe ? (here its very popular)
mrblah
Another not on the list is Serendipity. It's not super complex but it has a tone of features that are useful. The support and community isn't huge but they are really helpful.

e107 support isn't good and their developing team seems to be no longer eagerly developing it.

My personal choice will be Joomla. It's even better than it's predecessor, Mambo

e107 rocks,

this even leaves behind paid competitors like subdreamer, which was my favorite, chewing the dust, the easiest management ever
jeanoradean
I'd say Joomla, especially since it's so user friendly. You really just upload it and it works. It has a browserbased install, everything is clear right away.

I've installed it in different hosters so far, and almost everywhere it works like a charm!
shigajet
I think it really depends on what kind of site you want to have. I love WordPress too, although I see it more for personal sites. Joomla (another excellent CMS, IMO) is geared more towards businesses/organizations.

Again, this is just my opinion.

I fully agree. WordPress is, by far, one of the best CMS's out there. It's really not that confusing, it's easy to skin, there are tons of plugins for extra functionality, and there's a huge userbase with tons of ideas and support.

I've been using WordPress for 2 years and I love it.

Hi there !

I work with SPIP, which is a CMS coded by a french community but available in several (and much more Razz ) languages, including English and even some dialects.

I'm actually setting up my website with the last stable version and it's absolutely fabulous.

It includes the usual blog options (creating sections/sub-sections, writting articles and mini news), also includes all usual RSS-feeds functions, allows you to "plug" additionnal functions without touching the source code (great when you have to update your current version), also includes multi languages functions, ...)

Regarding the design, it very free ! All your templates are HTML/CSS files, located in one single folder (/dist). You can modify those files as you wish with no interfering on the source code. The cms uses a macrolanguage (XML inspired) which converts some parts of the code in PHP strings. You have no need for knowledges in PHP to work with it, and you can use this Appli as well for a little personnal website (online resume, or pet's photo album) or for a bigger project such as podcast blog or community portail.

Well, i've spoken enough on it, just see by yourself : http://www.spip.net/en and another contributor's site : http://www.spip-contrib.net/&lang=en

EDIT : following a little update on that site, i've corrected the link to the english part of spip-contrib. I'm now admin on it, if you wish to get some additional info, don't hesitate to PM me Wink

This is where it gets difficult in choosing - you look at a forum to try to help decide which CMS to use. There are a bunch of intelligent people, each of which seems to have a different opinion. This leads me to two possible conclusions: there's not that much difference and it really doesn't matter that much, or they're promoting their own software and their opinion isn't really unbiased and objective.

this site may be helpful http://www.cmsmatrix.org/
Jinx
So, which CMS would you recomend for a complete noob?
I need something with forums, and a wiki would be helpful, I've been looking at tikiwiki, but it all looks pretty complicated.
wodor
every cms seems to be sophistcated at first look (exept typo3 wich looks sophisticated ALWAYS ;)

you should try with drupal , and after couple of hours you should try mambo/joomla (because it's completeley diffrent)

installation of both of this cms's is quite simpe, after this you can taste them , and know your flavour ;)

this way you'll stop to be a noob, it's the only way, real noobs pay for configuring their cms's (and sometimes the earn a lot of money)

ps. drupal is more wiki-like it's easier to configure for community-writing.

It depends noob in what. If it's noob in using a CMS from A to Z (no familiar at all with admin interface or content managment in general) I'd redirect you through existing services on the web which propose forums and/or cms to be self installed for you (blogger.com, forumactif.com, ...)

If you are another way, no familiar with the (X)HTML + CSS + PHP code, don't use the one i just spoke about before, because i think it's best used by somebody who allready knows a bit what he is exactly doing. Instead, you can use some cms like Joomla, which includes a forums and set up a little wiki by its side (Mediawiki, the most complete, or tikiwiki, wikini, ... a little bit easier)

(Hey men, do you still think i'm making my own prom' ? Razz )
Jinx
Thanks for the rocomendations. I know HTML, and some CSS, but PHP and MySQL are completely new to me.
I'll check out drupal. thanks.

Well, you can think to play with some spip or xoops then Wink

(I don't know drupal, what's worth ?)

And Happy New Year, of cource ! Wink

Which ones of these use flat files? Or which one is the best one that uses flat (basic text) files.
hannesfuger
in my eyes typo3 is the best cms!
it offers a lot of features and you can uplaod a lot of different extensions to have much more Opportunitys!
you do not need a lot of knowlatch in php, java, but nevertheless you can made wonderful homepages!
Sorcier
I used Xoops in the past. Now I am trying to design a website with Joomla.
At first with version 1.12 but I had some problem with the character set which in french isn't utf-8....I am trying now the beta version of Joomla 1.5 to see if this is easyer for a multilanguages (french/greek) to o it.

Do you have any usefull links about utf-8/iso character set working with Joomla on a multilanguage website?
Thanks a loot Smile
Sorcier
I found that the reason of my problem to display special character came from my database that was set in greek... it s working better now...thanks for your non reply Very Happy

I mostly use joomla & Mambo...
because they have a very large number of modules and components available ,,, also because of templates...

Another vote for Joomla.... I've been using it to start up a couple of sites simultaneously, one a social networking site and the other a blog. It's amazing how flexible it is with all of the components and modules out there. Finding a decent template was a little tougher, without joining a template club there aren't a ton of high quality free templates. Well, there are TONS of them, but most suck really bad.

I've heard bad things about the number of queries a decent joomla+community builder site will perform, especially on a shared hosting plan. So far I haven't had any problems, but my community is still really small. Hopefully I won't wake up to a nasty surprise email from my hosting company sometime soon Embarassed

Phpnuke best for web portal...
master12
php-nuke loads way to slow and themes can take even longer but joomla loads faster and has no themes...

I really can't say because I hate them both but out of the two I guess Joomla could win over...
bulek
I use e107 on my site because I am very familiar with it. It is simple to use and there is also pretty good support for it. Then only thing I miss are few plugins and themes (styles). For example, Joomla has much more themes than e107. There is really a small choice for themes for e107.
DeFwh
e107, PHP Nuke Platinum and Evolution, Joomla, Mambo, and definitely Wordpress. These CMS's are omg uber amazing and have been well thoughtout and are highly supported by developer after developer and used by user after user. They work seamlessly and have always preformed to my expectations. They are all highly modifiable and are updated frequently.

What about Enigma 2 by lunabyte?

http://www.lunabyte.org

I set up a site using that a while back (I think it was a beta then but seems to be nearing final release even though the Beta was bug free and stable for me).

I have not had much experience with any others but it was very easy to set up and there was a good response time from the developers and community.

I wanted to add I recently added a site with Drupal, and it runs very nicely; although I can't find that many professional looking templates.

The other site I recently installed uses Elxis; which is a CMS based of Mambo/Joomla. Elxis is the complete package when it comes to CMS. I must say it takes time to learn it, but there are plenty of FLASH Animated tutorials out there to throw you into the right direction.

I also have a site on Dragonfly, but that just seems to messy for me.
The MAMBO/JOOMLA/ELXIS one is very dependable at the great price of $0.00.

Hi there,

I've tried the most CMS on the market, and never had I found an CMS that is that easy to customize as e107. I'm used to use xoops and latest xoops cube, they got the power, but not as easy to customize as e107.

My personal oppinion is that it depence on the main interface and the admin interface, and the number of mods, themes and plugins/module. And both xoops and e107 makes it as you want it.

Cheers!

So is E107 the best in terms of safety or just all round? I'm interested now because I'm considering running my website around a CMS.

Typo3 is the best CMS. Still It's quite hard to understand.
swizzy
textpattern should be on the list..... its lite weight... fast and much more efficient that others.... e107 is pure crap.... too many security holes, very big, no search engine friendliness, no optimization possible, and you have to manuall edit every php file to include bits of codes
hilander
I would go with OScommerce, it has big support and it has so many extensions that it could be use as a CMS better as only a shopping cart...
smpmedia
I've done some research using cms review sites:
http://www.opensourcecms.com/ - this one is great because you can test each system online (front & backend)
http://www.cmsreview.com/

For Aa comprehensive CMS I would recommend E107 - i'm using it for a community website (www.qmtbc.co.nz) and found it easy to install and customise
I have basic PHP, MySQL experience (which helps)

For a pure Blogging sight I would definitely recommend Word Press - very easy to instal and not too many features to confuse
I am currently testing intrgrating a Gallery plugin that use word press because one if the most importnat functioanlities is not having mutilple logins for each service you provide!

Happy testing

I like MAMBO. Is the best

easy to customize

phpnuke is also good

Yeah e107 and Dragonfly is good.

I've heard that phpNuke has many security flaws.
But, I've used TikiWiki and I was confused! Shocked

I've yet to make a decision on which CMS I want to use, so I guess I'm looking for some advice in general.

I guess I'll give some background before I start. I've never made a website before so there's a lot of basic web creation/management things I'm unfamiliar with so I want to find a CMS that's really easy to pick up. My friend suggested I use Mambo to get my first site up and running (I'm trying to make an online retail store) and when I did a bit of searching around I found out about Joomla.

Now I was wondering basically why anyone would use mambo still if Joomla is highly compatible with Mambo and supposedly is a redesigned (better?) version? I also have been reading that since it's so popular, there are many hack attempts on the sites running Joomla.

I guess my post can be summed up by a few questions. Which is easier to use Mambo or Joomla? Which is safer(harder to hack, better for an online retailer)? Or is there simply a better CMS for an absolute beginner?
d33k
My favorite is drual, i ve used typo3 but is a nightmare for customers and it was even
hard to understand for me Smile. I like drupal because its very easy to configure easy-to-use
backends which are not to overloaded specific roles (co-admins, redakteurs, uploader...)

I have been working with Joomla/Mambo for quite a long time now, and I have made a change. The needs of web development seem to be getting away from the mass portal vision, and so have I. I needed something that I didn't have to think to install, even on different hosts with different php server setups, and I needed a simple page creator and forum. Welcome website Baker. A php compliant CMS has never been easier to set up and manage. Granted, it doesn't have the massive community and add on base that Joomla/Mambo does, but for me that might be a good thing. I now focus on actually writing content for my site instead of playing with setting up the next "cool" modules.

I am still a Joomla fan, but I needed simplicity over function for this one.
ronaldallan.mojica
hahaha.. my favourite Content Management System is not here it is Typo3. Anyway i voted for drupal cause now im using it on my magic trick site.

Hi buddies,

wel i have used Xoomla and later on shifted to e107.... i would have showed you website, but its currently down..... i looking frihost it, well back to topic both are good and can have a good CMS system.

I don't see why Textpattern isn't on the list of options on the poll. It is simply the best CMS. It's really easy to use and you don't have to know any PHP or anything to use it.

I as well will have to go along with Joomla. Not only is it easy to use, it has more add-ons (component's, modules, mambots etc.) Then any other CMS i have dealt with. I have tried using other CMS's and none of them compared even close to Joomla. All the others, if there was something specific i needed it was painful trying to find it (add ons im referring to) and a few times i even had to code some of my own or pay to get them completed. With Joomla its pretty much if you can dream it you can build it. So far i have not had trouble trying to find a component or anything of that sort that i needed for any of my sites themes as well they have extensive lists of themes all over the place free of charge and they are very easy to edit to meet your needs. As most CMS's Joomla takes a little getting used to but i can guarantee you wont be disappointed once you do!

yeah i think this is a great software to use it is easy to use and more especially its more sufficient to use

In my opinion, Joomla is a really solid CMS and offers quite a few options, and a big number of themes. The main problem of the other CMS's is that alot of them don't have localized versions, meaning some users have to settle for less.
Joomla supports a quite alot of languages, plus all of the above advantages.

i am now using drupal. it is an easy installation and easy to understand but the little burden comes in my mind is to implement some of the require content base on the site requirements. but still very easy to use cms.

Hi everybody,
I guess you missed out on a very important CMS on the market.
It's powerfull and flexible, but it's not a out-of-the-box system.
It's got a 10 years history and it's pretty developed.
It's open source - check it out:

If you want to get an professional website use Typo3 and if you need to make a website as fast as possible use Joomla.
That's my 2 favorite CMS.
