Malaysia/Thialand/Singapore Overwhelmed by Indonesia's Haze

shenyl
Headlines on every newpapers in Malaysia and Singapore since begining of Oct 2006.

It seem like an annual event over that last few years - I mean the news reporting of the Indonesia haze.

Some sympathetic journalist wrote that it is more economical for the Indonesian farmers to clear their plots with match sticks, than bulldozers.

I am one of the many suffering from these economical approaches, and I am sure many more will suffer from the long-term effect of the haze on the global environment.

something is really wrong with indonesia. when disaster struck (tsunami -- twice, valcono in yogyakarta, the mud problem in sidoardjo), they lack everything (money, manpower, expertise) to handle it, yet they refuse any help from their neighbour, not to mention the arrogant way they replied when others try to help them, like when Malaysia want to send firefighter, instead of accept the help and being grateful, they refused it and ask malaysia, why when they export oxygen nobody ever thank them.

I do not intent nor wish to instill national pride issues.

I am sorry, if we still lived within the boundary of a nation. We are currently talking of world view, as citizen of earth, rather than citizen of a particular nation.

The Internet and even this forum, proof that we are indeed able to live in a boundless earth.

Thank you yy1124 for optimism, but it is not getting better still.

I guess educating people on the global environmental responsibilities is a long and difficult process.
Kelvin
it is 'getting better' due to cloud seeding and some occational rainfall which is not enough to get rid of the haze. Ever noticed the condition of your car after the rainfall, there is a layer of soot/dirt or whatever you may wish to call it which is different from those non haze days. It's been 10 years and there hasn't been any improvement in the haze situation each year.

IMHO Probably the only way for immediate action by the indonesian govt is if the world powers impose sanctions or produce tariffs for their environmental desctuction and yearly health issues stirred up each year.

The haze problem is a pain in the neck for Southeast Asian people. Its been going on for years. I remember riding to work wearing a mask to cover my nose and mouth. Visibility was low, thus increasing the risk of accidents.

The ministers are doing something on it but unfortunately little is done. Under ASEAN, the environment ministers came together and set up the Transboundary Haze policy that will allow other countries to assist Indonesia in putting out fires. The problem is that Indonesia has yet to ratify the policy. Reason for not doing so remains unclear. Some have accused Indonesia for dragging their feet, too proud to accept outside help.

Recently, Indonesia has mentioned that some Malaysian companies operating in Indonesia are involved in the haze problem. Malaysia said that if they have anything to do with it, they should be prosecuted. That's the spirit I would say. There's no point going after the farmers. Its the plantation barons that should be dragged to court.

Latest reports showed that Indonesia has been working on the haze problem dozing out fires and reducing the numbers from thousand to about 80 or something. And more recently, the environment ministers met in Indonesia to discuss the haze problem and according to the reports, Indonesia is evaluating what its nearest neighbors can offer in terms of aid.

The more important question is what is there to prevent another haze problem next year? Strong measures and concrete action... which unfortunately is lacking right now.

do you know?

"Burn" is one of the (most)Indonesian's habits.
they burn everythung they could in everywhere.

wherever they are, they always burning everything instead of throwing/scraping into bin. if you living in city you will see they burn 'rubbush' in the street rather than throw it to bin that have been prepare.

they always burn everything:

they burn the mall/building when riot
they burn the trees to establish new farm
they burn the rubbish in street in the mid of city or in front their house.
they burn human (a thief who was captured) rather to send him to police

and the last I watch on news a girl becoming stress after back from abroad and she burn herself as the way of suicide.

it's a hobby. that's why so many burn the forest at the sametime causing the haze.

the goverment try to encourage and advise not to doing so, or arrest the folks who try to burn forest to establish a new farm. but it's hard to talk with uneducated people. they're lack of knowledge. they still do it and think that's all right to do. they don't realize what they're doing already causing haze in other country.

Thank you all for your opinions.

But let us not be too carried away with our feelings.

I agreed that educating others on some issues are difficult.

I was also one of those who formerly find it hard to accept the
green approach.

Till I met a Swiss colleague, who will turn off his car, at traffic light.
Till I saw the problems we faced.
Till I hear lots of issues about global warming.
Till I taught in a Higher Education Institution, where
re-cycling is strongly encouraged.
Lately when I visited Japan, and saw how they kept their
streets clean - not by an army of cleaners (Singapore do that),
but by co-operation of the people.

I believe education is a long process, that we need to absorb in
and this is often slow. You also need to see and experienced
what others are doing, to internalise these information.

The people there are often poor and lack the exposure.

Be patient with them.

I am not advocating "Burn everything", but patience.

Keep your comments coming.
Kelvin
yup instilling the right education and teachings will help reduce unwanted issues such as this. However, it's going to be a very long process. It has been 10+ years since this problem became an annual affair. Till today I haven't seen much difference. Last year was the worst ever.

So we will probably have to wait for a few 'generations' to pass until they become educated? I just can't stand the itch in my eyes anymore due to the haze. Very sad indeed.

Just wondering why Indonesia did not do something about this early as it was happening yearly. I remember last year, our country, Philiipines was also on semi hazed that also came from far Indonesia, adding pollution, and i wonder how worse it is in neighboring Thailand and Malaysia.
shenyl
Yes, r_y_e_20, this has been a cyclic event for the last 10 years.

Many ministers has agreed to do something, but then it happens again, and more promises.

Thank goodness, the rain has done some cleaning up, and
the problem seem to subside now.

Will need to see if Indonesia will bring some companies to
account for their actions.

We can finally see the wide blue sky once again since yesterday...

It's great to breath "clean" air again, and the sky looks prettier than ever~
shenyl
Yes, after a few days of heavy rain.

I saw on the Strait Times (Singapore) a map of the region.

Indonesia is still very much engulf with thick haze.

The people around the hotspots (many of them still) will
not be able to see this clear blue sky for some days.

Enjoy the clear sky while we can.
