vbulliten is not free and therefor i cannot use it. also you did not specify why they are superior of other ones.
I like PunBB ...
This forum is like phpBB but ... lighter, CSS based XHTML w3c valid forum
It's little faster than phpBB...
If You don't need lot of unnecesery things in Your forum then PunBB will be great for You
It has good support, some plug-ins and it's user friendly

phpBB was really nice.
But I read that it is not very secure and very vulnerable to hacker attacks. That even several tutorials on cracking phpBB are available on the internet.
And all these people kept saying that SMF was the best. (Simple Machines Forum)
So I changed from phpBB to SMF on my site http://www.fundazone.com/forums
I saw that there is an automatic mod adding facility and other options I didn't see in phpBB.
The ability to create child boards - phpBB can do that only with a mod.
My phpBB is at http://www.fundazone.com/forum
and SMF at http://www.fundazone.com/forums
I'm trying to figure out which one to use and will switch permanently to one. For now, SMF is winning. But phpBB has countless mods which I think SMF doesn't have.
Anyways, post your comments.

SMF does look interesting. I might change from PHPBB, but the design I use isn't exactly available for SMF, so then again, I might not. Definetily worth checking out though, as it has very interesting features native to it, as phpbb needs mods to accomplish.
