Senator Warner has been one of the staunchest supporters of the Bush war in Iraq. When he questions what is going on there, it must be a serious problem.

Sen. John Warner on Thursday offered his darkest assessment yet of Iraq, saying the war there was "drifting sideways" without a commitment from its government to disarm militias.

Warner, a Republican and Bush loyalist, made his comments to reporters upon returning from a recent trip to the region.

He said the military had done what it could and that Congress must make some "bold decisions" if, after three months, progress is not made by the Iraqis to calm ethnic violence and hasten reconstruction.

Warner did not say what he thinks Congress should do, but added all options will be considered. Lawmakers have suggested various remedies, including setting a timetable to pull out U.S. troops and dividing the country into smaller independent ethnic states.

What's wrong with making up your own opinion as to whether there is something wrong there rather than idolizing a party line or a specific senator?

Iraq is getting better. It's just getting better too slowly.

I agree. Leaving is not an option. The US got itself into that mess and has the responsibility to clean it up. However terrible the reasons for going there, that really has no bearing on whether or not they should stay. If the US were to leave, the bloodshed would certainly not stop and the feeble government would surely fail.

If the US really wants another failed state in the region, leaving is the way to go. But if they are serious about wanting stability and peace in the region, staying is the only option.

However, it does need to get better faster, and the administration of policy in Iraq is certainly not what it could be. It is not a hopless cause, it is a chance for policy reform and progress.

Iraq is not a failure. The media want's it to be so they can continue living high on the hog.

The "drifting sideways" he was referring to is how the war there has changed. It was originally about WMD, torture, mass murder etc. Now that that's been taken care of, the focus has shifted to perventing terrorists from controlling the country. (That includes terrorist states like Iran)
