I can't find a free version of Visual Basic. I don't think there is one out there, and you must pay for it. VB6 is outdated anyways, Visual Studio is the newest out.

Support for Visual Basic 6.0 ended a long time ago. The latest incarnation is VB .Net.
Of course this doesn't stop it being exactly the same programing language it was before.

Sadly though with Microsoft being a business, there is no free version. Otherwise how would they convince people to use the latest .Net version?

There is VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) that comes with Office but that has a subset of the features. If you want simple though it would be ok provided you don't mind having to open a Word/Excel/Access file.

Alternatively there is StarOffice Basic (as used by OpenOffice) or Gambas (Free software implementation) which are designed to be identical. Apparently there are converters to translate VB6 into either.

I've only ever used VBA in the 2000 Office Suite (which was hideous IMHO) so can't vouch for any of these I'm afraid.

VB6 is very very old (11 years old now!), I'd suggest against using it. Instead, Visual Basic Express works quite well (see below)

Actually, there is Smile. It's called Visual Basic 2008 Express, and is totally free, and not restricted in any way. It's lacking some of the advanced features of Visual Studio, but not many people actually need these.

And, actually, .NET and C# are ECMA standards, and a lot of the source code is available. Because of this, a lot of .NET apps work fine on Linux and other OSes, via Mono.
