As far as sad songs go, I highly recommend Kamelot's "Don't You Cry". It's very well written, and ironically, I don't think I've ever been able to listen to it without crying.

I have quite a list of them, but the list is at home - if I remember later tonight, I'll list them.

Most, if not all of them, are 'oldies' - 60's, 70's and 80's - hopefully that won't matter to you!

I whole-heartedly agree with that one! Besides the Kamelot song that I mentioned, this is another one that's made me cry on multiple occasions. And the video just makes it even sadder.

Because sometimes it is good to wallow in in your misery. Nah, I'm not being sarcastic. Sometimes you just have to go to the depths before you can surface.

I'll make only one suggestion,

Anna Nalick, Breathe (2 AM)

It is slow and sad, but there is a glimmer of hope in it...

Here a slow and sad song:

Crazy Frog - Axel F

It so sad!! Crying or Very sad

Besides what HoboPelican already said, it's helpful for a person to listen to sad songs when he/she is depressed because it lets him or her know that they're not the only one feeling that way. Listening to someone sing about the exact same feelings that you have can be very helpful, at least in my experience.

HoboPelican and Thorns basically summed it up.

It's cathartic. You really need to experience your pain completely before you can really recover from anything...hiding from it can hurt more in the long run, which is why uplifting songs might not help as much.

Don't listen to sad songs. They are characterised by lower pitches, slower beats. I once read an article that it contributes to depression. Even if ur feeling upset listening to unhappy things is just gonna magnify the pain.

Very Happy I once read an article that said the world is being run by high priests who escaped from Atlantis, but that don't make it true. You need to consider the source for it to have any validity.
My point is that there is nothing wrong with giving into depression for a little while. If you are constantly depressed, you might want to look for help, but when life kicks you in the gut, feel the pain for a bit. Its a common thought that rying to ignore painful situations can cause psychological issues also. So, I say go ahead and listen to sad songs, sit in the shadows and think how bad life is. Then, laugh at yourself, get up and go back to living.

Artist: Nancy Sinatra
Song: Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down.

Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up, I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
"Remember when we used to play?"

Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, I used to shoot you down.

Music played, and people sang
Just for me, the church bells rang.

Now he's gone, I don't know why
And till this day, sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie.

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down...

Hurt by Johnny Cash

Here's a part fo the lyrics:
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hold
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

oooh.. the sad music makes my heart sing with empathy.. my heartbeat is like the beat of a woodpecker pecking wood at furious speed.. as i walk past the bushes which layed at the side of the street, i heard a sad tune.. it made my heart weep.. Tears rolled down my eyes as my ears got hooked to teh enchanting tune.. my heart was filled with fear that i would soon leave this beloved world.. soon i was drowned in my own tears as the magical tune kept getting louder and louder.. i wondered where the tune came from.. i hovered my head over the fence and saw something i regretted for the rest of my life.. i saw something hideous which made me wet my pants on first sight.. it was a creature.. disgusting creature.. it was my next door neighbour on his new karaoke machine.. so pathethic..

Breathe No More by Evanescence. Make sure it's the piano version. It's a very good song!
Angel's Tale by Hyde. Okay. This song is in Japanese but the English version is fine...except for his accent. But it made me cry! Lyrics excerpt: If only I had wings/Wings as white as yours/I'd take to the sky/I'd surely fly ..... *dreamy eyes*

HIM Gone with a sin

The show must go on by Queen always gets me. Maybe because it's one of the last songs frontman Freddie Mercury wrote before dying. In this song, he clearly expresses he knows his time is about to come and that he'll try to be strong 'till the end.
crimson_aria
The Art of Letting Go by Mikaila. totally a break-up song. The song made me cry tons of time even though I wasn't on a break-up situation. it's just so sad it's beautiful.

Pretty much the whole Radioihead catalogue Laughing
My fellow Aussies have come up with some great break up songs: Alex Lloyd's Amazing, Bernard Fanning's Wish You Well, Mental As Anything's Brain Brain, and this one by Split Enz - I Hope I Never

I fall apart when you're around
When you're here, I'm nowhere
I can't pretend that I'm not down
I show it I know it
I've been a fool - more than once, more than twice
I'm gonna move to a new town where the people are nice

I hope I never, I hope I never have to sigh again
I hope I never, I hope I never have to cry again
I still want to beam and smile yah
Happiness is back in style yeah
I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again
Again, oh oh oh oh

It should be possible I know
To see you without stress
But I can see I'll have to go
I'm changing my address
My urge to cry I have failed to conceal
Life - it's no fun when your hunted by the things that you feel

I hope I never, I hope I never have to sigh again
I hope I never, I hope I never have to cry again
I'm for living while you can
I'm an optimistic man
I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again
Again, oh oh oh oh...

I hope I never
I hope I never
I hope I never, never, never...

I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again

Again.

I don't know if it could be called sad as such , But " I saved the world today " by the Eurythmics always makes me wistful . Surely your friend would be better to seek out uplifting songs ? its no good immersing yourself in misery , one needs to look to the future Smile
