Anyone notice the great amount of defense we have seen in this first month. Just check out the top dozen teams in the rankings. With only two exceptions, they are winning mostly with defense, a departure from what we saw the last couple of years, when potent offensive attacks at USC and Texas set the tone. This season looks to be great with tons of great teams. My pick to play together in the National Championship are going to have to be Ohio State and Florida look at both teams offenses, both full of explosive players. Heisman winner can be a tough pick because of all the players doing tons more than what they are going to be look at Chris Leak he's having a spectatular season so far and Troy Smith Playing how many straight Ranked games? And sitll Keeping Ohio State number 1 in the nation.
College Football
I agree with your picks, but both teams have some challenges coming. Most notably (I think), Auburn v. Florida and Michigan v. Ohio State. Ohio State could play a 1 vs 2 game 3 times in the same year. Crazy.

You know, I did notice this.
It's like the NFL, where the defense wins. There are still teams with some seriously potent offenses, but the top tier is mostly defense based teams.
To me, its less exciting to watch a 7-3 win then it is to watch a 48-31 win.

Yea i notice what your saying too. But you can always go back to old saying, "defense wins championships, offense wins games" I know their just games, but the defences are at top notch, there winning the game because the offense would more than likely score and win the game. Defense is very important because if they dont stop the team, guess what, the offense isnt getting the ball. It works both ways, but defense is more important because they can the offense the ball back again.
Maybe the strong defenses from is coming from all the new coaches that have NFL experience. I don't remeber seeing college teams use the Cover 2 so much like they do now. Also maybe the college defenders are working out and developing faster now. For example, they always say that you can't run the option in the NFL because they are too strong. Maybe they are getting strong enough already in college.

True, Your defensive linemen have become much faster and more physical. THe lateral game is takin away. The major threat that most running QBs is a lot more nuetralized now then it has been.
The fact that there are quite a few ex-NFL coaches may account for quite a bit of the smarter defensive playing nowadays
