The Sun God, anyone?

Dwyer17
I think the Bible is full of crap. It's a nice story book, but no. I don't beleive what it says. I also don't really believe in god. So, I decided to worship the sun. Everyday I realize that the sun is truly what gives us life on earth. I can also pray to the sun, since praying never mattered anyways, it just gives me a little hope that maybe praying works after all. Usually it doesn't, but there is always a 50% chance that I will get lucky and get what I prayed for. The sun. It's a huge fireball. How could anyone think it's not a god? Just kidding, I know I sound silly, but I like the way I look to the sun as a god. It's pretty fun.

Anyone else do this sun god thing? I know a few people at my school do. I was surprised, but I guess I shouldn't be, since that's what the Aztecs did too and alot of other cultures.

Ummmm...no.

It does somewhat make sense, but I can't--I am Catholic and I'm not supposed to worship other Gods. Plus, I believe that God made the sun. I realize this sounds like a typical Sunday-school kid response, and maybe it is, but I'm choosing this for myself. I like what I get from Catholicism, and so that's where I'm going to stay.

No thanks.

Well i would disagree with your method. If the Bible is 'full of ----' then it means Christianity is wrong. Which means you need to look at other religions and see if they are true. You can't really worship a series of explosions (sun).

Here's are major religions to research: Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, and Judaism.

i like your character though.

may God bless you.
swapnalokam
hey hinduism.. see sun as God.. God is what it is, provider right? if there is no Sun, Trees, Water, Air.. do you think humans can survive.. we pray to sun, water, trees and anything naturally appear in this nature... actually we respect it... hmm more over.. it is not a strict thing that you should pray at all... why should God be discriminate with people who does pray and doesn't.. praying does not matter at all.. does praying changes things... yes it does SOMETIMES.. ONLY SOMETIMES.. but atleast it will give peace of mind to most of us..

It's very common to hear the word God and think of it as an individual, as a personality. I think it's more useful to consider the mysteries represented by the word: the origins of life, matter, energy, time, existence itself, how to regard death, and how to live in such a way that one will not be regretful when their life nears its end. These questions are common to humanity and represent the heart of religious thought. Many people seem to lose sight of what is common to all philosophy (namely, humanity) by becoming overly attached to traditional symbols of these basic ideas and questions, be they words, texts, shrines, or ceremonies. I think it's best to recognize the value in all traditions, to judge yourself sincerely, and to live according to your best judgement.

I don't think witches worship the sun, I think they worship the God who is represented by the sun.

Celtic pagans have Sun Gods.

I don't see any harm by praying to the sun. It sounds like you are already
opening yourself up, spiritually speaking, and that can only be a good thing.
bluedragon
yes it is good to thank the sun for its energy it gives us. it is of light, mass energy. but what greater effect caused that energy to get here and did we come from that energy and what greater energies might we be a part of?

If the sun is GOD, why not our own EARTH guys? because just imagine if the earth is not rotating itself only one part of world will be getting the required heat and light from the sun.

If the earth just stops as it is right now, one part of world would get fried in the heat within a year and the other part of world would get filled with ice.

So its not right to call the sun or the planets as GOD.

If sun is God then there are n numbers of stars are there in the universe which are more bigger, brighter and hotter than the Sun. Can we call all of them Gods of the universe?

If not now after may be 100 years the generation next will definately find another milkyway where there is another sun and it has its own solar family and there is a planet same as earth which has lives living there.

There is indeed a possibility of this.

If it does exists What will those aliens will call as GOD? .... their Sun?

Lets not forget Water.... Our body is 70% water and only 30% flush and bones. So we call water as God....!?

Then Oxygen, Carbohydrate ..... all these will become GOD Smile

Better lets call Thomas Edison as GOD atleast Eddie has given us many things what we enjoy today.

After all this, Do we have a clear definition for the factor called 'GOD'?

Whats it? Its a factor which created this universe? or Just a factor which we do not understand so we started creating stories on it.

I don't think any religion describes the GOD in a definite manner.

If anyone has any clear definition please post it here.

According to me the factor GOD is a thing which is created by someone who started thinking wisely how did everything happened .. when he didn't get any answer he made the factor as GOD and started warshiping in his own way and the same way others on their own ways.. thats all.

God is a destination we seek when we are in trouble just to get out of it and when we need something. Only then we remeber the factor GOD and pray towards it. When the thing we wanted to happen... happens .. we think its because of GOD it happened.

We forget whatever we did after we pray to the God and peopl who helped us to get that thing done.

We prayed to the factor called GOD but finally it happened because of some people or just ourselves.

So whats wrong if I call the people who helped to get the thing done as GOD?

Earth is our mother, she is known by many names. I know her as {Goddess} Modron. The celtic Irish know her as Danu. She gives us life, and we are sustained by the Sun God and the Gods of water.

There would be no gravity and we would all fly off.

There are many pagans throughout the world who would disagree with you. Although as I said in an earlier post, celtic pagans recongnise the Gods and the Goddesses of these places - sun, earth, water, moon etc. So anyone who is seen to be praying to the sun, for instance, is actually
praying to the God/Goddess

You may, but I don't. I talk to my Goddess daily.

You may call them gods if you want to. Smile These other stars do not effect our daily lives like the moon and the sun do, so they are of no real relevence to us, except for brightening up the night sky.

They probably would at some point in their evolution.

We know he was human, so that negates him being a god.

In my religion, the gods were not human, so like Edison, they don't qualify.

You would certainly not be the first person to worship the sun. With only the naked eye and blind human intuition, it is the sun that gives us all of our life.

With that being said, worshiping the sun as a "god" leaves a lot to be desired. For the more primitive cultures that did not have telescopes or scientific methods of understanding what the sun is, that answer may have worked.

For you, who knows that the sun is simply nothing more than a giant fireball of explosive gases, I would ask you to investigate how it is that the sun came into being? If you can answer that question, you will find God.

A better question is, why did Moses in the creation account in Genesis have light created before the stars (the sun is a star)? Could it possibly be that everyone would recognize that life comes not from the sun which the pagan cultures are more than happy to worship, but rather from God himself who created all of these things?

If you answer where the sun came from, you will find God.

Pagans in primative cultures may possibly still worship the sun, but most worship the God who is God of the sun.

Though this may be true, I would also like to point out that it does give you a whole lot of information about that God. Is he benevolent? Is she wise? Is he a he or a she?

The point being, worshiping anything that has been created or worshiping any god without any information about that God is inane.

Then comes the difference between "natural knowledge", that which can be deduced from nature, and "revealed knowledge", that which comes by God directly interacting with human beings.

It is a simple matter of worshiping the creation on instead of the Creator. It is like taking a piece of wood and carving your God and then bowing before it and asking it for help. It is a creation, not the Creator.

Worshing the sun as a god is not silly or unheard of at all it actually dates back to ancient Egypt where they worshiped Ra, the Sun God.

Quote:
Ra
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the Egyptian god. For more meanings of Ra, see Ra (disambiguation).
Ra (Arabic: رع‎)(sometimes spelled Rê based on the attested Coptic name and reconstructed as *Rīʕu (ree-uh-uh) ) is the sun-god of Heliopolis in ancient Egypt. In later Egyptian dynastic times, Ra was subsumed into the god Horus, as Re-Horakhty (and many variant spellings).

The Eye of Ra,
or the Right Eye of HorusThe sun is either the symbolic interpretation of Ra, his entire body, or just his eye. The symbols of Ra are the solar symbols of a golden disk or the symbol ⊙ (circle with a point at its centre). He was also associated with the Phoenix, as he rose again each morning in flames. According to E. A. Wallis Budge he was the One god of Egyptian Monotheism, of which all other gods and goddesses were aspects, manifestations, phases, or forms of the god.

This quote is just part of what Wikipedia has to say about Ra... many people today still worship Ra and some don't even realize that they do. A popular form of jewelry is the Eye of RA, it is also a popular tattoo. So in my opinion many still worship Ra weather they know it or not... Smile

I personally see the Sun God as being male. As gods know everything, they must be wise. Is he benevolent? He certainly isn't malevolent.

You're assuming that pagans doen't know anything about their gods. That's not so.

Pagans experience both of these types of knowledge but they don't put them into separate catagories as you seem to. By revering (not worshiping} nature, pagans become closer to their gods.

The carving represents the God. The act of carving the God would be a sacred act. As the carving is representing the God, bowing to it would be bowing to the God. Other religions have statues and icons and these aren't worshiped in the way you sugest.

By what you have said in your posts, you sound like a Christian. There lies the problem. You are looking at this from a Christian point of view, and not a pagan. You probably cannot understand how by learning about and revering nature, we become closer to our God/s

And why not? Do whatever's right for you, I say.

Well, considering that the sun can't answer your prayers as God can, I'd say it isn't worth your time.

That's only my opinion.
