Movies to watch before you die

Lusiphur
The story...

I'm currently comprising a list of DVD's that I think ppl have to see before they die. This list is so I can go out and complete my DVD collection, and then force people to watch the, in my opinion, best/most influential movies ever.

I'm posting here for 2 reasons, 1 is to get it in writing and 2 is to get other input and expanding the list.

So far, my first 15. In no particular order.

Original Star Wars Trilogy
Old Boy
The Boondock Saints
Pulp Fiction
Once Apon A Time in China
Deerhunter
Apocalypse
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Godfather Trilogy
Alien
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original)
Psycho (Original)
Haloween/Friday 13th/Nightmare (For an example of how slasher movies should be made)
Blade Runner
IT (This is what a horror movie should be imo)

What would you add to it? What Genres should I take representations from? Any critique on my choices so far?

Any input is much appreciated Smile
Loghete
Lol, I have only seen one (or actually 3) of those..
JoeFriday
not a bad list, but it reads like it was written by someone who didn't know movies were made before 1977.. how about adding some classics..

Casablanca
It's A Wonderful Life
Dr. Strangelove
To Kill A Mockingbird
Doctor Zhivago
Jaws
Breakfast At Tiffanys
My Fair Lady
Ben Hur
Touch of Evil
Cool Hand Luke
Monty Python: The Quest For The Holy Grail
Gone With The Wind (altho not a personal favorite)
Wizard of Oz
Planet of the Apes (the original)
Paint Your Wagon

as well as:
Platoon
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Schindler's List
The Usual Suspects
Saving Private Ryan
Terminator
Chicago
Cov3r70ps
Hrmmm... I havn't seen a lot of these. Plus, I have been needing something to do with my free time lately. Thanks for the list guys, I'll have to start cracking away at this stuff. Very Happy

And "force" people to watch!? Laughing Not sure if this is a project I want to be involved with....

I think some of your choices are alright, but I think its a very subjective topic. For example, I think the Godfather series was awful. Same with "IT".

Better horror movies, IMHO, would be Kubrick's "Shining" or the original "The Haunting".

I think I'd have to think about if the movies in this list are "must see" for how they demonstrate film techniques, the evolution of film making, or just straight out entertainment value.

For entertainment value, I'd suggest :
The Usual Suspects
To Have and Have Not (the best Bogart/Bacall IMO)
The Blues Brothers
Raising Arizona
Ronin

@JoeFriday - Touch of Evil had its moment (the opening shot), but do you think it holds up as a complete flick? Without that one scene it would be pretty average fair. Of course, I hated Citizen Cane, also. Wink
handles
I don't know if it's on DVD, but I'm surprised no one else has mentioned The Gods Must Be Crazy. And I'll second just about everything JoeFriday mentioned. Wink
JoeFriday
@HoboPelican.. I guess I don't remember Touch of Evil well enough.. it's been a long time since I saw it.. I'll have to dig out my copy and watch it again.. I know that it's generally considered a true classic.. but as you said, so is Citizen Kane, and I agree that CK is highly overrated

here are a few more from my collection that I'd recommend:

The Game
Young Frankenstein
Sixteen Candles
Animal House
Grease
Seven Year Itch
La Femme Nikita (the subtitled version)
Hunt For Red October
The House of Flying Daggers (not a classic, but one of my favorites)
A Christmas Story
Lusiphur
Good point about the lack of old movies, to be honest my collection comprises of very little old movies, but that's the point of this thread Smile

A lot of the movies that are being mentioned I'm slapping myself for not mentioning myself, as I have them and love them.

I've added a few to my list, and have taken a note of ones you mentioned that I haven't seen and am going out to get them.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (One of Jacks's best movies IMO)
Schindlers List (Great way of dealing with a very delicate story)
The Shawshank Redemption (First time I watched this movie I just sat
back and enjoyed it, one I have reccommended to everyone I know)
Silence Of The Lambs (I would feel bad not putting this up there,
Hopkins preformance is nothing short of great and is a reason to watch
it)
The Big Lebowski (Genuinely funny movie)

@ Hobo, yea the list is very selective. Tbh I'm not a huge fan of the Godfather, but it stands out as a prime example of how a story can be told over multiple movies and I feel that is a good enough reason to watch it.

Shinning is a great movie, I must confess to never having seen the orignal Haunting though, while rectify that shortly Smile

Hmm, wonder how expensive this project will end up being?
mialynavahy
I agree for this movie : Schindler's List
it's The movie you have to watch

a lot of those movies that you mentioned were American. If you feel daring, you should venture out into foreign films. excellent ones that i have see are

Smaritan Girl (korean),

A Bout De souffle (aka breathless, from france)

Infernal affairs (chinese, it is also being remade by scorsese as The Departed)

Run Lola, Run (german)

y tu mama tambien (Mexican? haven't actually seen it but i have heard many good things about it)

as for an animated movie I'd recommend Princess Mononoke (which is japanese)

that's all I can really think of right now.. but I highly recommend these movies.

Hi Lusiphur,

I don´t know if I think that post is morbide or very interesting Laughing

I watch some of them that You posted.

I loved those too, and I guess those are unlosable too:

- Pretty Woman
- Monsters SA
- Down With Love

For now.
eLto
Waking life
The Matrix trilogy
Butterfly effect

All three dealing with concepts of life, so should you watch something before you die, it should be some sort of "explanation" to what your time here was worth.
rightclickscott
I can't believe noon're mentioned Trainspotting, that has to be my favorite movie to date. It's about Herione addicts in Scotland, and it was one of those movies of the 90's that everyone had to see. There's also an obscure japanese movie called Battle Royale that was just amazing in every possible way.
dac_nip

I am going to be crazy after reading the whole discussion. What I am going to do is, get all the movies mentioned in this topic, that I dont have in my collection and watch them all. I am a crazy hollywood movie fan.

BTW nobody mensioned about LOVE ACTUALLY and JET LI's HERO - these are poineers in their theme. I mean LOVE ACTUALLY is going to be the actual life of several people, full of love, happening in western culture. And HERO is the real Hero in all respects. He sacrifise himself for the bright future of a big nation. (I am also a die hard Matrix fan btw)

My favorite "weepy" movie is "Joyluck Club"
My favorite horror movie is "The Omen" (the original one, not the remake)
My favorite mob movie is "The Godfather trilogy", although the "Infernal Affairs" trilogy is quite good ("The Departed" is a dissapointment after having seen Infernal Affairs)
pudovkin
Hm. Today I'm on "Dolls", from Takeshi Kitano.
(a little close to "It's all about love" that I've suggested)
shigajet
Hard to say what movies I should see in my lifetime. The list is pretty long...but among the titles are LOTR trilogy (only seen the first installement), The DaVinci Code, The Green Mile, etc.
TVme
Hopefully, you can see this movie a long time before you die. Every time I see "Groundhog Day" I spend a week trying to living life to the fullest until I start taking life for granted again. This is my favorite romantic comedy movie. Every role is played wonderfully. This is still an under-rated gem.

Rita: Have you ever had déjà-vu?
Phil: Didn't you just ask me that?

Actually it didn't take that long (~35 min.?) and I enjoy going through film lists, especially if they might contain something I haven't seen or perhaps even heard of. There were a few I had to look up at IMDb and some I had known but never thought to include in my database.
tweek200788
Commando, you wrote Star Wars twice.
Did you think that Star Wars was that good, that it deserved to be up there twice?
Haha.
I don't blame you.
I love Star Wars.
Except for Episode 1.
Freaking Jar-Jar.
Why do you exist?
Haha.

I agree with a lot of your lists, but the one I MOST agree with is JoeFriday's.
The only two I didn't on yours was "Chicago" and "It's a wonderful life".
All the rest were amazing!!!
It's a wonderful life, although great story line and characters, was a little cliche to me.

I am a film major in college.
That is not meaning that I know more than all of you.
I don't.
Everyone has their own opinions and likes.
I just like film very much.
And I like to think I have great taste in film.

Well, bye ya'll.
tweek200788
IMDB is da Shiznit!!!!
The answer to all of your film questions.
It's like google to all of your porn questions.
Haha.
Or the answer to The Question.
42.
Haha.
Who here knows what that is from?
haydxn
Let's see...

There is a list put out my the American Film Industry that has the top 100 movies of all time. I can't remember the website but I'm sure you can google it. The top 10 are:

Many movies are good, some are great, but only a select few can be called truly "essential." After heated discussions, long negotiations, and a shouting match or two, the staff at Yahoo! Movies has put together this list of the 100 films you must see before you die.

To choose the titles for the list, we considered factors like historical importance and cultural impact. But we also selected films that we believe are the most thrilling, most dramatic, scariest, and funniest movies of all time. Some of these films you've seen, and some you may not have heard of, but we believe that each one is a timeless classic that you absolutely have to see.

For a look at the movies from the more recent past we also think are worthy of acclaim, make sure you also see "100 Movies to See Before You Die: The Modern Classics." It highlights the greatest films from across the globe made during the last two decades.

I look at on http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/100-movies-to-see-before-you-die.html

I don't think there's a single list on this thread that I've seen all the movies from. Which makes me agree with what's been previously said, that many movies are good, but you need to watch them before you die? Actually, given my view of heaven, I wouldn't say that you need to watch any movies before you die - but this thread is largely in jest.

Maybe I will point to a different version of 'need' though. Movies that you need to watch to understand many pop culture references? The Matrix? The Lion King? I'd like to say 2001: A Space Odyssey, except far too many people I know haven't seen it, or have any idea what it's about.
