From the DOE as noted above, I copied the following data.

June 2000 $1.47
Oct 2000 $1.47

June 2002 $1.32
Oct 2002 $1.33

June 2003 $1.39
Oct 2003 $1.52

June 2004 $1.98
Oct 2004 $1.91

June 2005 $2.09
Oct 2005 $2.97

June 2006 $2.79
Oct 2006 $2.35

I know that the elections are coming up. The peak driving season is over so the oil companies have made their record profits and can afford to give millions to the politicians and political party that supports them. Let's see, Exxon has its headquarters in Houston and where is the president from and what business was the VP involved in? Who wrote the energy bill, could it have been Cheney and the oil companies? HMMMM? Could there be a connection? Not a conspiracy just good old fashioned capitalism and price gouging with the American public being gouged in the butt one more time. Since June 2000 the price of gas has gone up about $1.00 per gallon, must be some reason for that. I won't even mention Iraq and tthe oil that is not being pumped out of there.

gas prices have nothing to do with elections.. it has to do with the time of year..

1. the summer driving season is over, so demand has dropped

2. after prices spike, gas-guzzling car sales always drop, lowering demand even more

3. oil refineries don't have to manufacture 'special blends' once the smog season is over.. their regular mix is cheaper to produce

4. the Prudhoe pipeline was expected to be shut down longer for repairs.. having it operational again means no major shortage, so prices have eased

5. hurricanes.. what hurricanes? no major refineries shut down

it's the same argument as saying ice cream causes crime.. that is, every summer when ice cream sales go up, crimes also go up.. the reality is that ice cream sales and crimes both increase because it's warmer out.. there is no connection between them otherwise

same for gas prices and politics.. elections are always held in late fall.. which happens to be when gas prices always drop.. this happens nearly every year, with the exception of the recent past, however that clearly can be pinned on two things: instability in the middle east, and China hoarding oil to build up a national reserve of their own

Oil prices are driven by the market, the market may place some concern in the elections, but not this much. I agree with JoeFriday on most points, however there are a few other reasons. With the Chad-Cameroon pipeline under construction, the Doha feilds in Chad will be able to be exploited, the rise in gas prices has allowed synthoil producers like South Africa's SASOL to step up production.

(Who knows, perhaps specilation is going on that with Bush out of office certain major oil producers will be safer) Wink

You know, I really didn't even make a connection here - but isn't everything for politics nowadays.

It’s no surprising that things always get a little better before election time. Those in control want to stay in control. And I won’t be surprised when there is another large terrorist attack before the 08 election.

Gas Prices have NOTHING TO DO WITH The Elections.

1) The Gov't does not control them.

2) The Hurricane's held off this year, with pre-Katrina Oil Fields being put back onto the oil line.

3) The driving season is very slow this time of the year, hence prices fall.

4) The President can not control gas prices again. This has nothing to do with the elections. Typical democrat to throw that out here....... I am sorry something good hurts the Democrats cause.....

sorry....... no connection whatsoever!

Of course oil prices are coming down ... things have been too good for them lately, and they want to see the good times continue to roll.

And of course, the obligiitory terror alert is due in about 2 weeks. Fear buys alot of votes.
