Movie Converter
Just use Windows Movie Maker that came with your WIn XP OS. It's found under Start-all programs-accessories.
Select "Import into Collections" from the file menu and select the AVI file you wish to convert.

try virtual dub/.... its freeware software that converts video in different formats/// i forgot the site just google it... 
I use imtoo, it convert all video format, into any format, even the latest like for psp, ipod, etc ...
Thanks goansfr imtoo looks good but i wish it could have been free ...
There's a great freeware converter called SUPER: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html It can convert to almost every single video format. But the best part is it's free
