Is it possible to clarify a bit your question?
How you are trying to connect to the Internet? How your machine is supposed to obtain it's IP address?
Are you running another operating system on the same machine? If so, are they any problems with it?
A quick cure might be to use some live Linux distribution e.g. Slax. These distributions are pretty good in auto-configuration. If it succeeds to configure the network access you can explore the settings of your machine, this might give you the idea where the problem is and how to fix it.

Questions for you:
-What kind of linux?
-How do you normaly connect to the internet?
-Is it part of a home or office network or a standalone PC?
-Are you sure you know how to 'use it for the internet'?
