FEEDBACK PLEASE! My art glass website.

Satori
Well, I'm finally at a stage where I would like some feedback about my website. Keep in mind that this is still a work in progress. I have much left to do before I would consider it anywhere near finished. But at the least it is now functional.

Please give me any criticism or suggestions you might have!

www.satoriglass.com

Thanks!
jayzee
very nice piece of work.. i like it (Y)
dray101
very, very nice Razz

I like it, the sites a piece of art too! Smile

Do you make the products? they are very nice. I especially like the turtles and the marbles Wink
Satori
Thanks for the replies you two! It definitely boosts my confidence a bit Smile

dray101 - I do make all of the art you see on the site. Lots of people seem to like the turtles! I've only done a couple of them so far, but I definitely will be making many more! Feel free to contact me through the site if you want one for yourself Smile

Anyone else have any feedback for me?
coreymanshack
This all looks really good Smile.. the website and the art!

Very nice!
I almost want to see more color in the banner simply because your pieces are so beautiful and colorful themselves, but then I realized that the monochromatic color scheme is is an excellent backdrop for your work. I also think the addition of some type of footer would be nice because right now the bottom of the page looks a little odd as the content just stops.

The work itself is fantastic.

Also, did you code this yourself or is it based on a template? Either way, the coding is very well done.

Overall, very impressive. Thank you for sharing Very Happy

Wow, thanks for such an informative reply! I have been meaning to add a footer on the page, but as of yet have not figured out the best way to do so (I'm still learning html and css as I go...but I've got some ideas that I'll play around with and see what I can come up with.)

As for the code, I did a fair amount of the coding myself, though parts of it are borrowed from some templates (such as the graphics for the boxes and link highlights on the lefthand side and the nav bar hover graphic.) I wrote all the html myself using coffeecup (though I typed it all without using any of the built in coding features.) Parts of the css are borrowed from a template, but I made a number of additions and changes to fit my needs...so some of the css I wrote myself as well. The layout of all the coding (spacing, indents, etc.) is my own anal retentive work. Smile I am very neat and organized as I'm sure you can tell by my code...haha!

I am in the process of learning javascript (this is my first website I've designed and it's taking quite a bit of time to learn all the coding to do so.) I really want to jazz up the site a bit with javascript to make it more dynamic. But this will come with time and practice...my first priority is to get the online shopping cart up and running! Can't wait for my first internet sale!

Anyway...thanks again for taking the time to really analyze every aspect! I really appreciate it.

Please keep the feedback coming!

online shopping cart? your probably going to need php for that my friend.

Ahh, actually my dear friends at Paypal have a free one I can use Smile Haha. I'm not making my own, just using theirs. But before I do, I'm going to refine the gallery area a bit and make it easier to properly place "buy it now" buttons.

Though some day I do intend to learn php as well! All in due time!

Great looking site! Very good layout, great use of color layout and choice, though I almost think a little more color may do you better to bring out the fantastic art on your site Wink

Other then that, what I noticed several other people say I agree with: more color in the header, something to bring it out a little more, though it's a great image. Some type of footer, I'm sure you could be creative with that Smile

Also, perhaps to get a little fancy, a custom-sized popup window for your gallery art, so that when you click on them they have a well formed box, with perhaps some features from your layout surrounding it. Might make it look a little cleaner then a big blank white window Wink

Great site overall though, and great art as well! Smile

Thanks for the input! You're not the only one who wants more color Smile My girlfriend is all about adding more color to it.

I am all about making a custom sized pop up window for the gallery sections. In fact, what I truly want is a window that will pop up to the proper size, containing the image, a background, a description of the piece and a shopping cart button. My problem is how to do this without coding a seperate page for each individual piece of art. I know this will take some javascript and maybe even something else to store all the data I'm talking about (especially the descriptions.) Anyway..I intend to figure it out, though I wouldn't mind a little help along the way!

Thanks again!

Keep the suggestions coming!

You have done good work!

Layout is very nice. But in the end you should make a footer. Maybe copyright section or something else, but I think that it is needed. Header is very nice and clever made. Background has nice image which suits wonderfully with other theme. Colours are pretty.

There is only two minor coding errors in site. <base href="http://www.satoriglass.com"> should be <base href="http://www.satoriglass.com" /> and <img class="center" src="http://www.satoriglass.com/images/working.jpg" alt="Me Working"> should be <img class="center" src="http://www.satoriglass.com/images/working.jpg" alt="Me Working" />. That belongs in xhtml basics, every single tag must end /> instead of >.

nice website.. is kinna plain for me though... but still... it looks professional and clean... keep it up the good work dude! Laughing
Technaut
wow. intresting hobby, and you seem to be good at it. exactly how much are one of those turtles? i want to get one for my mom. Smile
Satori
Sami - Thanks for the kind words! I am working on a footer, but having a bit of trouble making it stay in the right place Smile Also, I fixed all the minor coding errors...thanks for letting me know!

7gts-scout - Thanks for the nice words, and being honest Smile I know it's a bit on the plain side right now. My chief concern is functionality right now. Once I have everything up and running...then I can take my time adding some spice to it Smile

Technaut - Thanks for the compliment! Just for reference, it is not JUST a hobby, though it is quite fun and enjoyable like a hobby. It is actually what I do for a living Smile The turtles are $40 a piece. This is strung and ready to wear of course. I include a black neck cord strung with a sterling silver clasp. Full sterling silver neck wires are available for an extra $10. If you are interested, please contact me through the website and we can talk more through email.

Very awesome style. It meshes well with all the elements on the page, and it also meshes well with your content.

The code looks pretty clean, and well organized. Finish it off, and lets see what else you have to offer.

I think your next biggest step is going to be integrating the gallery / artwork for sale. How will you differentiate what is for / not for sale?

benjad - Thanks for the reply! I'm currently looking for a shopping cart to integrate into my gallery area. As for differentiating what is for sale and what isn't, everything is available unless otherwise marked. Anything that sells, I will very visibly mark as sold. Once I have the format I want for the gallery area, it will be very easy to tell what has sold and what is still available.

I posted another thread asking for info about shopping carts...you can check it out here:

nice site & glass art! Very cool glass you have maid there!

Very impressive: both the site design/layout (simple yet professional), and the glass itself. I will definately want to pick up a piece or two in the future! I was especially drawn to the round pendants, how large are they out of curiosity? I would center the copyright line in your footer personally but that's just me.

I've bookmarked the site so I may have more advice later for you,

-David-
fadirocks
looks cool

here is my suggestion:

add the Kanji for Satori in the header pic! what do you think?

Very Happy
Satori
Matte52 - Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it as always!

David - Thanks! I'm glad you like the layout. Hopefully this week(end), while I'm visiting family in Colorado, I can make some progress on the shopping cart dilemma. As for size (info I've been meaning to add to my site) the round pendants range from approximately 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches in diameter (plus an extra 1/2 inch or so for the loop.) Most of them are between 1 and 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

Once I have the gallery area set up how I intend, when you click a thumbnail, you will open a window with not only the larger picture, but a short description and an "add to cart" button. In the description, I will include exact size measurements for each piece.

For now, if you see one you like and want more info, feel free to contact me through the site's contact form.

Oh and lastly for you, David, I considered centering the copyright line, but I wanted to add a little "valid xhtml strict" and "valid css" tag on the right hand side...just haven't gotten there yet. Plus I have one css error that I'm not sure about how to fix yet.

fadirocks - I honestly don't know what a Kanji is, let alone what the Kanji for Satori is Smile I assume that it's some sort of symbol? Either way, I would love it if you could enlighten me. I've been looking for something to incorporate into a logo design, and if this Kanji is a symbol it just might be what I've been looking for! I'm anxious to know whatever you can tell me about it!

Thanks again everyone!

Keep the feedback coming!! I'm loving it!

Great site design, and the Artwork too, 10/10.

Nice job, the lyout is very very very cool and it is the coolest website i`ve ever meet.
Satori
fadirocks - Thanks for the info! I'll see what I can come up with!

LostOverThere - Thanks for the comments! Glad you like the site and my art.

undoweb - Thanks! Glad you think it's the coolest site you've seen!

Thanks! The links should work...do you have javascript enabled? If not, then nothing will happen when you click them. If so, then at least a window should have opened. Right now, the glassartists site is down for maintenance, so even if javascript is enabled, you would just get a window with an error message.

tamilparks wrote:

Hahahahahaha!! Are you serious? This has to be a joke! I can't tell if you're concerned about my eye safety or yours. Mainly because of the quality of the English you used...but to make you feel better, if you are concerned about your eye safety while looking at my homepage, please realize that what you are looking at is a PICTURE of a flame from my torch...not the ACTUAL flame. The PICTURE does not radiate any harmful UV rays or anything that can damage YOUR eyes. It's JUST A PICTURE.

Now, if you're worried about MY eye safety, then maybe this will make you feel better. The ACTUAL flame on the other hand CAN be dangerous to someone's eyes who is looking at it for extended periods of time WITHOUT ANY EYE PROTECTION. Notice the glasses I am wearing in the PICTURE. Those glasses are special glasses. They have what's called a didymium lense in them. This special lens blocks the harmful rays of light that come from the flame of the torch, but mainly it blocks the harmful rays of light that come from the glass when it is melted at such an extreme temperature (in excess of 2500 degrees.) If you think the torch flame is bright, you would be surprised at how brightly the glass itself glows at such an extreme temperature.

But rest assured, my eyes are protected from the possible harm that could come to them from staring at molten glass in the flame. So if you were worried about MY eye safety, you really have nothing to worry about, though I appreciate the thought.

Nice site!!! And the marble you made with a flower design inside is very very cool!!!! just curious, how much are you asking for it?? and what country are you from? please PM me as i dont login often. thanks

plato - Sorry you don't like it! It's hard to please everyone. If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear some suggestions from you as to how you think I could make my site more interesting and less plain and boring. I appreciate your response, but it would be much more helpful to me if you could give me some specific things you think I could do to improve. That is why I started this thread in the first place!

SamiThe Berber - Thanks! I try my best to keep the code clean and simple. Glad to hear it works well in a text-based browser.

ColdFire - I'll PM you as well, but figured I'd respond here. If I am thinking of the same marble you are talking about, it has actually already sold. The picture on the site is just a couple random marbles I had. I have yet to really start producing marbles for sale on the site. I'll PM you with more info though

Thanks everyone for the replies!

1st, I should mention that your site is created with the CoffeeCup HTML Editor 2006, it is a good program but not a professional one. You might use a pre-designed template, and just replaced the texts. I suggest you to study html basics and the best program in my opinion for designing a htmlous sites is MS FrontPage.
2nd, you should change the title of the page "Satori Glass", it should contain some informational and important words about your site content. Attention do not use "Welcome to my web site". May be the phrase "Welcome to Satori Glass, XXXXX" is good whereas the XXXX should be a brief explanation about your whole site, may be "View and purchase handmade glass art."
3rd, use some other colors for total designing, not just gray or black
I think it is enough for now.

Thank you for taking the time to give a more in depth critique! I really appreciate it.

1 - Yes, I do use coffeecup to edit my html. But I do not use the program to generate any of the html, as I type all the code myself. So really, I could be using note pad if I wanted to, but coffeecup highlights the text to make the html easier to read. That's one of the few reasons I use it instead of just note pad.

I've never used frontpage, but as you can see, the editor I use is not important because I type all the html myself. As for your suggestion to "study html basics", that is something I have already done. Not to say I don't have more to learn, but before creating this web page (my first I might add) I of course had to learn the html and css needed to produce it. So I would say that I have a competent grasp on the basics. Now, the more advanced stuff is beyond me right now, but it's something I intend to learn in the future. I am in the process of learning javascript right now and have a very feeble grasp on some of the basics. It's another area I really intend to improve on.

2 - I like this suggestion a lot! Next time I update the site (probably this week some time) I will come up with a more concise title/description.

3 - You're not alone thinking that the site needs color. My girlfriend says the same thing along with some other earlier posts in this thread. I don't disagree with you, but for now at least, functionality is my chief concern for the site. I'm working on a shopping cart (which is turning out to be a huge undertaking) and until I get that done, the style and layout will remain the same (including the colors.) After that, then I will take more time to properly figure out a nice color scheme.

Anyway, thanks again for your input! Please feel free to suggest more if you can think of more to improve on!

Thanks for the replies everyone! I haven't checked this thread in a while, so I'm sorry for my belated response. So I'm glad that most of you seem to like the site. But what I want to know now is this: How can I improve upon what I already have? I think I have a decent start for my page, but I want it to be better. So please respond if you have a suggestion about how to improve, or a critique of something to change.

I appreciate all your input, so please keep it coming!

Thanks!
Satori
No one else has anything to say?? Will this thread just die right now?? Well, if it must be so...then so be it. But I really was hoping that someone would see this and maybe make some comments! I don't care what you have to say. Good, bad, neutral...it makes no difference to me! Just tell me something! If for no other reason, it will at least give you some points!

Let's hear it!
roboguyspacedude
Obviously your site is still under construction, but I love the layout. It is simply, but clean and organized. Also, I like the idea that the site is an original site, not something that is a copy off of other sites or ideas. It is your own store and that makes it quite unique. I would like to see this site again when it is completed. Good job so far!!!!!!! Your glass work is amazing as well, such detail, I could never even begin to think how to make such stuff. Smile
Dakafall
That is a very awsome website! I wish I knew how to do that! The image on the front kind of hurts the eyes but other than that it is ok...
Satori
roboguyspacedude - Thanks for the kind words! I was going for simple on the layout (partly because it's easier to navigate and partly because I'm no html master.) I'd explain the process I use to make the glass, but it's much easier to see and understand than it is to hear (or read) and understand.

Dakafall - Thanks! Sorry the image on the front hurts your eyes Smile You're not the only one...though it doesn't hurt my eyes and my eyes are usually quite sensitive.

Anyone else have any input for me?

I likie alot! I love the colours, and the background. The only thing I don't like about it is the gallery, more pics!! Theres like 1.

God it's not meant to be an award winner. The site is simple a way to access the true art (satori glass)!

and I think as a portal to the art, the site works very well and even looks nice! Razz

I like the layout. It's very nice! ^_^ The pendants are very lovely, as well as the marbles. Keep doing what you love. You're great at it. xP

I also find it odd that I came across this thread, as well as you and your site. My favorite fantasy author, Tamora Pierce, has a series called "The Circle of Magic Quartet", and another one called "The Circle Opens". They are about the same characters, but I believe the series "The Circle Opens" is the series that began the other series. You ought to read Shatterglass if you haven't. It's a great book and I think you may like it since you enjoy making glass artwork. Wink

It's about magic, but it's also about glassblowing, etc.

Question Question Question wuh? Question Question Question
Satori
Thanks guys for all your feedback! It really helps me along to hear what others have to think about my work. It's also great to hear someone tell me they like my glass art. Gives a little boost to my day Smile

unraveling - I know the gallery needs more pictures! I have been a little lazy about working lately and haven't made much glass recently. So less glass means no new pictures on the site! Also, at least half of what's on there is sold already...so that's another sign I need to get to work! Thanks for the feedback! It could be just what I need to get my butt in gear and make more stuff!

JessieF - Thanks for the feedback! I'll have to check out those books you mentioned. I'm into some fantasy books and those just might be right up my alley! To me, glassblowing is pretty magical as it is Smile

Please keep it coming! I love to hear it all! Good, bad, ugly, it doesn't matter to me!

Thanks again!
