In my opinion, It is without a doubt the New York Yankees. Whether you love em or hate em, you have to admit that they are the most successfull pro sports team in the world. Even before George Steinbrenner came onto the scene, the Yankees were winners, with superstars such as Babe Ruth,Lou Gehrig,Joe Dimaggio,Don Larsen,Mickey Mantle,Roger Maris and the list goes on.
You cant blame George Steinbrenner for trying to make sure that the Yankees always succeed. He has the money, so he tries to go out and buy the Best Talent. I guess as long as the Yankees are owned buy him or his family, they will have the biggest payroll in Pro Sports.

I would imagine Real Madrid, Barcelona or Man Utd would be up there
The greatest franchise in sports history would definatly have to be either the Yankees or the Lakers. Both teams have won tons of Championships and there is no doubt that they are winning franchises. They have both had some of the best athletes and coaches of thier own time. Kareem, Coach Jackson, Shaq, Kobe, Magic, George Mikan, Wilt and Worthy are just some names that everybuddy knows played for the Lakers and there even more

i agree.. i think that (excluding armaghbhoy) are only focusing on sports in the usa, but worldwide football runs more money than any other sport. so i agree with this choices...True, the Yankees have the most championships for any franchise in any sport, only 1 more than the Montreal Canadians which no one has mentioned yet.
The Lakers are a joke. All Hollywood as far as I'm concerned. The post above about the Celtics is right on. I just didn't post it quick enough myself.
My vote for the greatest sports franchise ever is the Chicago Cubs. 98 years since their last championship, but they still sell out every single game. They must be doing something right.
American Basketball is, though a great franchise, pales in comparasion with association football.

Didnt they do a survey recently where they compared the gross turnover of clubs around the world,of all sports and found manchester united to be the most successful,ahead of the yankees,the trouble with baseball and basketball they dont have worldwide appeal,they are in effect local to the USA bar say japan (baseball).. whereas football is worldwide.
