Google may be an ISP

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I thought under Websites would be a good spot. There have been rumors going around for awhile about Google becoming an ISP, and that they have bought up a ton of IPv6 addresses (the new type of IP address). I was wondering what other people thought about Google becoming an ISP.

Google is helping out with municipal wi-fi rollout in US, as they probably view it as a sort of protection against telcos who want the power to allocate different amount of bandwidth to different sites based on the amount of money those sites pay them (Net neutrality, etc.). It might make sense. But there are a lot of variables at work here, and Google isn't sure of pulling off all the obstacles from their path. They have a huge amount of "dark fiber", optical fiber that isn't in use, and they have a huge block of IPv6 addresses, but when you consider the amount of IPv6 addresses available, it isn't very significant.

Google is also rumored to go after Microsoft's bread and butter with the rollout of web-based office application suite. They certainly have a large part of the office apps market covered. I personally think the large block of IPv6 addresses are to provide hosted office apps and collaboration tools to small and medium enterprises, along with maybe websites (think Google page creator).

I see Google turn more into a application hosting provider in the future, with major cash flows coming in from hosting business along with the ads placed strategically on the applications hosted. In fact, with the ads subsidising part of the cost of hosting, Google might have extremely attractive options for small and medium enterprises to outsource their computing infrastructure to Google.

Google is absolutely, without a doubt, heading towards being a power to be reckoned with. Little by little, they are creeping up on Microsoft. They are taking their time and doing it right, creating (and perfecting) one thing at a time and then moving on to the next project. I'm putting my money on a Google OS within the next 10 years.

LOL. No, not at all. I didn't mean it in a bad way. I think it's great. Microsoft has gotten a little too comfy. They need someone else to come along and shake things up. And if the competitor gets the best of Microsoft, so be it. They shouldn't have worked so hard to make the better product and then sat back on their haunches like they were invincible. Seems like I remember a time back in the 80s when IBM was all that and a bag of chips. They did the same thing Microsoft is currently doing, and they eventually got shuffled out. Now Microsoft is getting dangerously close to losing the software war because of pure laziness.

I wouldn't doubt it. Google is trying to do everything, seriously.

But the beautiful thing is that they're not trying to do it all at once. If they came up one day with email, an Office replacement, a graphics program, etc, and expected it to go over well, they'd fail miserably. A) Consumers would ignore them, and B) Their stuff would be full of holes.

The way they're slowly releasing Beta versions of various programs and then (much later) releasing it to the general public, they're serving 2 purposes. (A) They're getting the programming right and working out all the kinks and (B) they're building excitement and desire for their product (think back to when people were foaming at the mouth for gmail and actually buying invitations on ebay). It's positively brilliant! Wink

Go Google Go ! I really loved the way Google came into the whole thing ....

Till Gmail started , mailboxes were so small that email used to bounce all the time.

But once Gmail set the trend - everybody followed !

And the nice clean interface of google.com - shows the power of simplicity - at least they understand that many people still use slow net connections and cannot waste time on loading huge pages.
