what can be done to save the local rock music scenes?
I say rock harder
The answer's very simple.
Go to shows.
If you enjoy a band, go see them live. Especially for the more underground, lesser known, unsigned bands, who's concerts are often very affordable contradictory to the whole $100 a ticket thing for some major artists. Encourage others to go to shows too, support the bands you enjoy so they can continue doing what they love and what you love to hear.
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with rock. A scene dies when the fans get bored and/or find something new. True fans won't listen to a band because of glitz/popularity/trend, but because they like the music. When the music starts to suck, they may abandon their liking of the band.
