What sort of website do you want to make? If you want to make something about databases or pictures or forums, ... you will have to use a php tutorial. I should advise to read a good book about this subject. Some websites have good tutorials but some other will have bad code... You can better test the code to make clear if it is good or not...
If you want to make a html site, you can better look for a great website or one you really like. You open the sourcecode and you search for the elements you want to learn. Thereafter you can start from a blank page in notepad and test the code you have learn.

Search for Eric Meyer. He is one of the experts in web design using xhtml and css.
I would always recommend Lissa Explains HTML because you can easily understand it and its a step by step process. Its actually for kids so I'm sure everybody will be able to understand it. Just google for the link though because I keep on forgetting the address.
