Ok...I saw that GameSpy ranks it as the Game of the Year (2005) when I was looking for good games to buy...what's so friggin good about it? It's just turn based strategy...and it costs a fortune ($49.99 at BestBuy at the time of writing)...so why do people praise it until they suffocate?

I've not played the game, due to my machine not being capable of doing so!
I know of a couple of reasons it is rated so high, and NONE of them are valid - in my opinion.
1. Sid Meier. Anything he does seems to be rated high - even if it is crap.
2. The "Civilization" name. When Civ II came out and rocked the gaming world, it was 'deserved'. Now, they still rate "Civ" games higher just because of their memories.
BTW - I'm sure the graphics are better than the previous Civs.
Also, Do you remember the game 'Alpha Centauri"? That was also by Sid Meier, and came out AFTER Civ II. At the time, and it still might be, it was the HIGHEST rated game ever from PC Gamer!! But NOBODY ever seems to talk about it anymore!

Civilization, Colonization and Pirates! are rated high, and they deserve it.
Civ4 has better graphics, you are right. But of course, it's not all that is new. I'm going to tell you "religion" but you cant understand it, because you never played it. Why would a person that played Civ call it crap?

Sorry about the confusion - I did not mean to call Civilization crap! Especially Civilization II.

I've played it, but I don't praise it. I do admit it's a good game, it takes into account of making the AI smart, having a good tech tree to work with, and good graphics to boot. However when I play strategy games I do like real-time a lot more, but I like Galactic Civilization II (turn-based) more than Civilization IV.

I believe that Civilization 3 is better in many ways, but CiV4, is 10000000 times better than many games that there currently are at the market.
A LOT BETTER. It could use some more lifting and finishing touches though..
It is also SID MEIER'S.... i don;t know about you, but i LOVE, and Have, and buy all the games created by him... (civ1,2,call to power,alpha centauri,civ3,4).
All of these games may seem boring to some people that can't understand them,and/or didn't try to understand them and play them.
P.S. i also like many of the games that MonterCristo has produced, They rock as well :p

Its such a rich and amazing game. You have to really invest some time into it to get enjoyment out of it.
I played Civ II back when it came out and loved it. Civ III was lackluster, but IV really gets back to the mold of Civ II and is great.
Religion and specialists really add to the complexity of it as well.
If you are looking for a quick, mindless strategy game this isnt really it though.

It is an awesome game! It is a little like risk (the board game) but super advanced. It is simply the best game. Just give it a try.
The games like this are my hobbies.I dont know however i get fun.

Cool I also played all civ games and liked them for the gameplay style. But I dont play it as much as fps games or another rts called aoe3. But its fun when I need a break from the competition stress from other games.
Fairly refreshing games I'd say and has better graphics than older versions but the graphics still aint great.
Same idea as other civ games just a little nicer.
aoe3 i thought was good...but there werent enough nations to make it worth playing anymore after you've played it non-stop for a whole week...
so...judging from the previous replies i come to the conclusion that civilization 4 is a thinking game...and a very good one too...is that correct? well no need to tell me cuz i'm going to bestbuy tomorrow to buy a copy (it's on sale!)...let's hope the millions of people who say civ 4 is good arent wrong...
