SMF now has versions 1.0.8 and 1.1 RC3, but for some reason I have a feeling that 1.0.8 is newer or something. Does RC have something to do with a beta?

RC Means Release Candidate.... it's like a beta but with less errors....
Yeah, vivaprint is correct. The newer version is 1.1, but the current stable version is 1.0.8, but notice that version 1.1 it's a release candidate and it's already on the 3rd RC, so you should expect very few, or no bugs at all. I'd go with the 1.1 version, but that's only my opinion
