Creating a Favicon For Your Site

What is Favicon?
When browsing the internet with IE, look in your address bar and you will see the Internet Explorer page icon. This icon also shows up when you add the site to your Favourites. This is known as the Favicon. Many sites, including phpBB.com and amazon.co.uk have created their own icon that is displayed instead of the default IE one. This tutorial will go through the steps needed to create your own.

1. First, you will need to acquire a software package that will allow you to create icons. I would recommend using IconEdit. This can be downloaded from here http://www.iconedit.com. You will use this to create your icon. Just remember that whatever you create will be very small once finished and displayed in the browser.

2. You can choose to create either a 16x16 image or a 32x32. Microsoft suggests that you create a 16x16 one, so I recommend you start with that size. Create the icon how you would like it to look using the various tools within IconEdit. You can see in the image the Kazaa icon within IconEdit.

3. If you have an existing logo, you can try and import it into IconEdit. This will allow you to make a better job of the icon. Take your time when creating it, this will be what people see when they visit your site and also when they (hopefully) bookmark it. Make it good!

4. Once you have finished your icon, you can save it. It must be saved as a .ico file. You can do this easily by going to File > Save As and then typing a name in the box. It will automatically select the .ico file format.

After you have created your Favicon, you must now add it to your site.

1. Save the icon as a .ico file in the root of your site, that is not in any sub directory. The file must be called favicon.ico to allow it to be used by the browser. It will now be displayed in every page of your site. You could create an individual one for each directory of your site if you like by adding it to the sub directory you want the icon to affect the pages.

2. To make the icon appear when your visitor adds the site to their bookmarks, you will need to include the follow line of HTML in the meta tags of every page in your site:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.somedomain.com/favicon.ico">

3. Finally, you should check to make sure it is working with your site and that it looks how you want it to look. Edit as necessary.

Dude, try MSPaint, or any image editing program. 16x16 bitmap, rename to favicon.ico. No need for crappy software.
