Hey, was wondering if someone could explain how meta tags work. Do you automatically get added to search engines if you include them on your site?
not hardly man, you have to usually ask them to include you in their index. at google you can sign up and include sitemaps and everything for your site

Google doesn't generally bother with Meta tags. It reads your web page and decides for itself what is relevant, what the title should be and what keywords are there.
The reason that google didn't detect your meta tags is because meta tags are no longer in use with search engines. They are obsolete. Now sitemaps are used by search engines. People got tired of web designers putting false keywords and information in their meta tags. Now you actually have to create a sitemap with every url for every page in your website. And then you do descriptions of each page in the sitemap.

Most likely if you do not spam it by lots of keywords. keep it relevant to your site.
Everybody seems to be crying here!!!! meta description tag is not important, it is useless... It is not ..... It is one of the most important factor to get higher CTR from search engine results.... It gives you ability to list your site with the description you want.
coreymanshack, your site is listed with the description of your meta description tag. below is the screenshot.......

yea i fixed them.... it turns out that i had this...
| Code: |
| <meta blah="blah"/> |
and it needed to be
thanks for your input though!
There are so many people talking about the meta tag. Some say it doesn't matte anymore however some not agree with it.
For me I think it useless putting the meta tag, but I put it on my site anyway just in case.
However the result when google show my site is the words that appear on my very first paragraph instead of the meta tag.
So better keep your site relevant to the keyword, especially the top paragraph of your site.

If you place your meta tags right, it will show the meta description tag.
It will show meta tag in serps if you keep it relevant to your site, do not spam it with keywords, do not make it extra large.
Yep +1
There's also the DMOZ effect : because Google still relies on the DMOZ directory, if your site is indexed there, Google will take your site's description from there, not your meta tags.

Dmoz is not accepting new submissions for quite a while now. It is quite difficult to get listed in dmoz anyways, you may still wanna check http://gigenestuff.homestead.com/DMOZ.html
This should only be a temporary thing, you should soon be able to submit URLs again. The thing with DMOZ is it can take months before submitting a URL before they consider it.

That sux pretty bad, I want my site in there as soon as I submit it, I guess you could call me impatient
Dmoz is now accepting new websites for inclusion. To submit url to Dmoz http://dmoz.org/add.html
