Laptop advice needed - Around £1000 budget.

turbosquid
I have spent quite a while looking for a laptop on the net, i'm thinking of spending around £1000. It's a difficult decision to make as i have had no opportunuty to test any of the ones which interest me, i'm working only on manufacturers specifications.

I need a laptop that is fairly portable I.E 15.4" TFT not 17" and would like somthing that i could use for a few games although i'm not a heavy gamer so an alienware laptop is not an option.

The laptops which i am considering are:-

Samsung R55

- Intel Core Duo 1.66 Ghz
- 15,4" WXGA Glare TFT, max. resolution 1280x800
- 1024 MB DDR2-RAM PC4200
- 100 GB hard disc 5400rpm
- 256 MB nVidia GeForce Go 7600
- DVD-+RW Double Layer drive (8x/4x/16x/10x/12x/24x)
- integrated Wireless-LAN(abg)
- 4 x USB 2.0
- 4-in-1 Card-Reader (SD,XD,MMC,MS Pro)
- robust enclosure with magnesium alloy
- SuperSilent-Mode
- Microsoft Windows XP Home
- 24 months FastGuard Euro Collect and Return-Service

This seems to have a good all round spec but i have not ever had chance to use one so if anyone owns one or has used one let me know what you think Smile I can not find a review anywhere on this laptop.

LG P1

- Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz
- 15.4" WXGA LCD, Auflösung 1280x768
- 1024 MB DDR2-RAM PC5300
- 80 GB Festplatte SATA 5400rpm
- 256MB Hyper Memory DDR-RAM ATI Radeon X1400
- DVD+-RW Double Layer Drive (8x/4x/2x/16x/10x/12x/24x)
- Wireless-Lan komplett integr. (54a/b/g)
- 5-in-1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro/XD)
- Bluetooth
- Fingerprint
- Magnesium Chasis
- Blaues Cover (Blue Cover)
- separater Nummernblock (Numerical Keypad)
- Windows XP Pro mulitlingual
- 2 Jahre Garantie (2 Year Guarantee)

Again seems a good all rounder but i've no idea what its actually like.

Acer Ferrari 4005 WLMI

- AMD Turion 64 2.0Ghz
- 15.4" WSXGA+, max res. 1680x1050
- 120 GB hard drive 5400rpm
- 1024 MB DDR-RAM main memory
- 128 MB DDR-RAM ATI Radeon X700
- DVD+-RW Double Layer Slot-In Laufwerk (8x/4x/16x/10x/12x/24x)
- Wireless-Lan integrated (54g)
- Bluetooth, Infrared
- 5-in-1 Card Reader/Writer (MS,SD,MS Pro,MMC,xD-Card)
- 1 x DVI-Out
- incl. Ferrari Bluetooth Optical Mouse
- lightweight carbon case
- Microsoft Windows XP Pro oem
- 2 year bring-in warranty

This laptop seems to get good reviews although the graphics card is a little older with only 128MB ram.

LG S1 (yes another LG)

- 15.4" WSXGA+ FineBright TFT, Auflösung 1680x1050
- 2048 MB DDR2-RAM PC5300, max. 4096 MB
- 100 GB Festplatte SATA 5400rpm
- 512 MB ATI Radeon Mobility X1600, 256 MB Hyper Memory
- DVD+-RW Double Layer Drive (8x/4x/2x/16x/10x/12x/24x)
- Wireless-Lan komplett integr. (54a/b/g)
- 5-in-1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro/XD)
- Bluetooth
- Fingerprint
- Multimedia Fernbedienung
- Schwarzes Cover mit Klavierlack (Black cover - Piano Black???)
- reddot design award winner 2006
- separater Nummernblock (numerical Keypad)
- Windows XP Professional Multilingual
- 2 Jahre Garantie (2 Year Guarantee)

I am an Acer Ferrari fan. I think they look really sexy. Great flaunt value. And what's inside is as good as the outside.

Since you said you don't play games so much, maybe that graphics card will be good enough for you.

The LG P1 looks like a great buy too, judging from the specs.

What, no Core 2 Duo ?

I also have been looking around for a laptop since my R3240(Presario - AMD64 3200+ - 1.25GB 333 - 60GB 7200RPM HD) went to laptop heaven. You have numerous ones listed here that I would gladly trade my left testicle for. I have read multiple articles speculating as of late that people may want to hold off for a month or two on their next laptop purchase for two reasons

1) the price of Core Duos dropping to move inventory
2) the price of Core2Duos dropping to the Core Duo price.

Just a thought.

These systems are all great, I think it is like buying a car... finally you'll end up with the car whose colour your wife likes best. In my Opinion the high resolution Displays are awesome... but I hardly believe you can read the text on your screen because it'll be too tiny. But, just go for it! Spend some bucks.. And, forget about the fingerprint sensor. My brother has the IBM T43p with the fingerprint sensor, and he is about to trow the laptop away anytime he uses the sensor to log back on. It needs 3 to 4 tries untill successfully recognizes his fingers.... how long do you need to type in your password .... haha Smile

Dude whats this fingerprint sensor anyways??
Well, I am even getting a Laptop, but am not faced with such a dillema. I m getting it InshaALlah as a gift Laughing so no hectic.

That Ferrari one seems to be nice. It all depends upon ur eyes and ur purse my friend.

Warm Regards,
sbel
the fingerprint sensor locks your computer. or similar to that. so no unauthorized user can access it Wink

Laptop hunting not going well!! Mad

I eventualy decied on the Samsung R55 as it seemed as it would offer me everything that i would need in a small portable package.
So i ordered one from Play.com as they had it "In Stock" Smile and what fun i have had! 24 Hours after ordering the laptop i recieved an email informing that the laptop had been posted, which was great although it did not tell me when i could expect delivery so i decided to give them a call as i wanted to make sure that i would be home to receive the delivery. I called the helpline and got through within seconds no queue what great service i thought, i explained to the pleasant young lady that my order had been posted and that i wished to know when i could expect delivery. She replied sorry sir your order has not been posted it is showing out of stock on our system, but she insured that i would recieve an email to let me know the status within 24 hours. I waited a day and no email so called them back again i was told to wait 24 to 48 hours and i would get email conformation letting me know when to expect the item. This went on for almost a week still nothing. I eventualy got through to the customer services manager who promised me that she would sort the porblem out and get back to me. Within a couple of hours she called me back and told me that they had deffinately got the laptop and it had now been dispatched and that i would receive it Monday morning. There was know way that i could be there monday to take collection of the laptop which was not a big problem as i knew i would be able to collect it from the couriors depot. Getting home Monday evening i found the delivery driver had tried to deliver but as i was not home they had taken the laptop back to the depot just as i expected. I then lept in my car drove accross town through the rush hour
traffic to collect my new laptop from the depot, easy just sign on the dotted line and take it away. On collectiion the item was wrapped in the usual blue polythene bag, so i just picked it up and raced back home.
Great thought i, it's finally arrived i peeled open the packaging and saw the Samsung logo looking at me so i continued opening the packaging then i saw it.... they had sent the wrong laptop AAAAAaaaaaaagh!!!!!!
Almost two weeks of messing around and then they send the wrong laptop! To say i was unhappy would be an understatement.

Today i am expecting a courior to collect the item and return it for a full refund, i just hope nothing else goes wrong in the meantime.

EDIT:
Does anyone have any experience with the following laptop:-

Quote:
Samsung X60

- Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
- 15.4" WSXGA+ LCD @ 1680 x 1050
- 1024 MB DDR2-RAM
- 100GB SATA-150 HDD
- ATI Radeon X1600 with 256MB DDR-RAM
- DVD+-RW Double Layer Drive with Light Scribe technology
- Wireless-Lan (54a/b/g)
- 6-in-1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MMC+/MS/MS Pro/XD)
- Bluetooth
- Magnesium Chasis
- Windows XP Pro

I have just placed an order for one from DigiUK for the cost of £1108 (aprox. $2,056) which seems quite reasonable when comparing to other machines of similar specification. If anyone does have experience of one of these please let me know what you think.

TIA
