[urgent] unknown error

CyanEyed
hi,

im working on my dad's site which i said would be finished by tuesday 5th.

if you go to http://www.sammanufacturingltd.co.uk/terms-of-service.html and look a the pages and links columns on the sides, u'll see the that the image is broken. i need to get the columns up to the top again so that the image will be solid with no gaps in it.

im using a table-based layout, so i set the image alignment to the top of the cell.

any help would be appreciated as i need to finish this project before tuesday.

Thanks,
CyanEyed

While I do not condone your current way of doing things, this code fixes
your current problem. I would suggest redoing this design in a WYSIWYG
designer because the code is, to be blunt, atrocious. If you'd like, I can
redo this page and create a template for you to use for the rest of the site.

Code:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Terms Of Service::S.A.M Manufacturing</TITLE>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

   if (document.images) {
      rslt = new Image();
      rslt.src = arg;
      return rslt;
   }
}

function changeImages() {
   if (document.images && (preloadFlag == true)) {
      for (var i=0; i<changeImages.arguments.length; i+=2) {
         document[changeImages.arguments[i]].src = changeImages.arguments[i+1];
      }
   }
}

var preloadFlag = false;
function preloadImages() {
   if (document.images) {
      tos_over = newImage("images/tos-over.jpg");

firstly, thank you for the code, however, can you please highlight the changes you have made so that i can place them into my code, instead of copy-pasting it.

secondly, what do u mean u dont condone the way that i have done it? if you mean using tables, i have only done it like because its meant to be a small website with a limited target audience and i used PS and ImageReady, which automatically puts the page into tables to control the images.

thirdly, "atrocious" ?!?! WTF is so wrong with it???????

finally, Thanks for the offer but no. i'd rather code it myself and learn from my mistakes than have someone else create the whole site. if i wanted to do that i would of asked my dad to hire someone to do the site - whereas now, im learning and getting experience.

PS. i did this in a combination of DreamWeaver MX 2004 And 8

Use a diff tool to see the differences.

I would have not have let ImageReady create the code for me; it creates
horrible HTML, almost as bad as MSWord. Wink

I would have created my image slices and then created the HTML
manually. Having background images in your table cells is not "standard"
even though it is supported. I would have used CSS to do all the cell
backgrounds and not mixed the styles like you have. I also would have
used a stylesheet so the code would have been a lot easier to read
AND maintain. You also don't need the javascript to preload the images
as that technique is outdated.

I don't think I've ever had anyone turn down a free offer like that but it's
your perogative.

thank you.

firstly, imageready creates the code, a lot of it when i cant be bothered to do it by hand.

secondly, background images:

so i dont stick to the standard, i deviate. it still works doesnt it??

thirdly, i have used css for the text (not images). if u had looked at the top of the code u'd see that it is a linked style-sheet. also, as i mentioned, it has a limited target audience and the site wont matter them as long as the content is there.

fourthly, the javascript is for the rollovers. i dont know another way so i use what i know. and it does work, the page isnt left retarded if javascript is disabled.

finally, i turned it down because my father asked ME to create the site for him. and i want to do it myself.

ps. as long the page works in all browsers, then it doesnt matter to me if the code is atrocious.

pps. if the code is so bad, but the browsers can read it, then its good, cuz it makes it more annoying for somebody trying to find a sourcefile in the code.
