Table Tennis - does anyone here play?

Da Rossa
It's the best sport in my opinion. The most intelligent one. Full of tactics, demanding physical performance and emotional/psychological control as well. You cannot blame the team for losing, it's all on you. Also, the physics involved are pretty interesting. It is fancy and fashionable.
For players and non-players, I'd like to know your opinion about this beatiful sport. What do you understand about it?
p.s. Table Tennis is not ping-pong. This reminder is necessary as in my country the term 'pingpong' is refered as a 'minor hobby for sporadic happy hours'.

I think about the table tennis as the hardest game to play professionaly. A minor lack of concentration could bring you loose of the set or even match, and a minor lack of the physical or psychical training could destroy your form.

IMHO only "touched" people could be real professionals. It's so damn hard to be top rated player.

Why is it not ping pong? Ping pong (pingpangqiu) is a Chinese word for what I believe to be the same thing as table tennis. And as it's the most popular sport in China, I have a feeling ping pong is the same thing as table tennis.

I used to play table tennis when I was on holidays in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), something that seemed very famous back then.

In here (Brazil) Table Tennis is not respected as a sport by most people, that's a shame here. They usually learn about the existence of the Table Tennis playing on a concrete/stone table 4fun, then they think that it's all about it. And then get used to call it pingpong. Nothing further, they don't even want to learn about the professional table tennis, and this has become serious, as the sport is not taken into consideration like football or volley here in Brazil. Therefore it is harder to get a sponsor and to convince the sport-secretaries to invest on it. Just because it is called "pingpong", a funny kidgame.
De_Luis
I only played it during holidays. As a pro-sport I don't like it that much. Never watch it for real on tv for example.

Anyone else? Very Happy

I also play table tennis...wouldn't say its the best game in the world (well I'm from India and here this slot is reserved for cricket ) but still I love the game.

Many ppl think that its a very easy game...physically...if u play for 2-2.5 hrs...its quite exhausting.

Annd what I really like abt the game is the speed. play against a good opponent and u'll really enjoy the game.

I've also played with my friends and at school. But I haven't played for many years now.

I was quite good, I think. The shool tournament I was fourth. I only lost against a girl because I couldn't concentrate on the game against her. I don't know why. I did a lot of smal misstakes that I didn't do in the other matches.

Maybe I should look up some place here so I could see if I still got the touch.

Let me know man (actually this is important to me): did you misconcentrate because she was hot and deviated your attention, or did you shake because she was a girl that played well and this did not sound good at that moment, or what?
Thanks!

She wasn't hot, but her friend was. Maybe that had something to do with my problem to concentrate, because she followed the match near by. Very Happy But I guess that the thing that a girl was playing good was the biggest reason.
Da Rossa
I understand! Even worse!! A hot friend watching the match from near, uhuhuhuh. But in my case, when there's someone hot supporting the opponent, I usually play even better. I try extracting a motivation from it Very Happy

I used to play it when I was small, just for fun (Every sport that I play is just for fun). It require a lot of skill, just like every other sport. But maybe because I wasn't playing "professionally", I feel that it does not require much of your stamina. Also it only takes place on a small table, and I think that's why it doesn't get as popular as basketball and football.

You maybe right, or partially right. I think that the big deal it that 'observers' just consider it a funny game called pingpong that doesn't demand much of physical prepare. That's why, in my opinion, the TT is disregarded.

Well every physical game has its own taste. I once hated table tennis and thought it was a bad game until i played it myself and then was addicted to it when i was in college but recently i am not finding time to play it but i do some time paly it when i get the chance.

I like and respect Tennis too, in my humble opinion it is sport #3, behind the Table Tennis and Athletism. But my empathy with the TT is about the strategies, self control, variances of styles, environment, etc Razz

I like playing table tennis(píng pong), I used to play table tennis in my house, with my family, now i play with my friends and i think i play pretty good. The sport is one of the fastest in the world so everyone who want to plya it must be too fast and with skill.
photon
i goto play TT when i was in my 8th grade. my school had a pretty cool team which represented the state in nationals. the best part was, even though i was a complete newbie, all the seasoned players were pretty helpful and i picked up the game in 6 months. too bad i had to change schools after that year.. havent tried my hand at it for almost 7 years now Sad

after reading this post, im gonng do something about it Smile

I'm in China, and it seems everyone here can play table tennis!
ncwdavid
I love table tennis. I have never actually bought a full size table as they are rather expensive and I wouldnt be able to find the room in my house for one so I just went with them cheap sets with two rackets and a net you can stick on your kitchen table. My kitchen table is massive so I play good games on it. I love the speed and concentration in the game. I also love to watch the pros on tv playing serious matches. They are really good.

My European trainer said that any garbage-collector in China would laugh on him in a match, Razz

Its quite a popular game here in South Africa and just about every little town ( that has a town hall ) has a club. I used to play it during lunch-times at work and it definately was not ping-pong Smile We would spin the ball and have quite powerful smashes. Its really amazing how you can "bend" the flight of the ball just by manipulating the angle of the bat.
desertwind
Even though I don't agree it's the best sport, I usually play that in my home and office. quite fun. needs a lot physical and mental concentration. too hard to play it professionally.

I think your post is some kind of offtopic desertwind...

Oh, I'm sorry, really, I was commenting your style on the picture, but no one may say if it was a position for picture shot or real play.

Sorry man...

I played last time but stop playing it already now. Prefer playing football Very Happy

Table tennis is one of my favourite sports. However, I don't take it too seriously. I play table tennis to relax - table tennis isn't as exhausting as badminton for example. But it's fun anyway!
