Here in Brazil domain names and hosting are very cheap...

I've had good experiences with NameCheapas a few people mentioned, as it does include the Whois Protection. Their pricing for .com domains isn't too bad either, only $8.88 USD. I originally had one of my domains at Optinom, but I had transferred it to NameCheap, running into a few problems along the way.
Granted, this may have just been my account on Optinom, but I had made the dumb mistake of not unlocking the domain before trasferring. During the transfer, the domain was removed from my 'Admin' section of Optinom, yet the transfer hadn't even finished, much less could it finish. After NameCheap cancelled the transfer, I still didn't have access to the domain via Optinom. They said they would contact some other company, who appears to also register domains. I can't remember the specifics, but it appeared as it Optinom was actually reselling domains.
That's my experience between both of them, which may be a little (or very) biased.
I saw a while back that yahoo was offerin domains for $4.97 / year or something similar...
