I was thinking of designing a friendsre-like website for our school only. But until now, am still wondering how can it be done. Are they using sessions in it? How is retrieving a picture and other settings for a particular user done? Are the settings and pictures stored in a database or just a a file...???? Anybody please help.......

Yes, you use a database to be organized and make things simpler.
The you should use any language that can interact with the database. (e: PHP, ASP, Perl, etc.)
Then you should use the html and some CSS to make the look of the website?
Any questions, just let me know. I know a little of PHP.
This is the current website I am working with database, it works in my comp, I still have to setup the database in frihost though.

Actually, i've started doing some of it...the only problem now is can i provide the user an option to customize his account....
