ustad bismillah khan is no more

manumiglani
ustad bismillah khan, shehnai maestro from India is no more. He died early morning on August 21, 2006.....
His death marked the end of a great era of classical music.

He was single handedly responsible for making shehnai famous. He was credited with having almost monopoly over the instrument as him and Shehnai are almost synomyms.

He has played in Afghanistan, Europe, Iran, Iraq, Canada, West Africa, USA, USSR, Japan, Hong Kong and almost every capital city across the world. He played everywhere from the celebrations of Indian Independence day to the celebrations of nomination of American president.

He was awarded with the highest civilian honour in India....

I can't say I have heard about him before nor have i heard if this instrument. But this is really a big loss for the music world. I really think that the musical and vocal master of old like Mohamed Rafi, Mukesh and Lata are unmatched in their talents. The singers and lyricists of today simply lack the depth of their works.

strange u've never heard abt him. He was a great musician.
very rightly said by manumiglani...he made shehnai famous singlehandedly.

A very simple and huble person...even after many honours and awards he chose to live in his old home...success never affected him.

Its shame that he could not fulfill his dream of performing on the India Gate.

Yeah, he got ill when he was scheduled to play at India Gate. It was his last wish to play shehnai at India Gate.
