JEdit is a Java-based Programmer's Text Editor that has features which can be compared to Emacs. It is extensible, with a lot of developers contributing plugins that greatly enhance its functions. The nice thing about the plugins is that these can be downloaded through the editor itself.
JEdit was created for programmers, and so it has the features that programmers look for. Syntax highlighting, line numbering, word wrap on and the possibility of opening up another smaller text editor from within the application itself for those snippets that one needs for writing codes.
Since JEdit is Java-based, it can run on any platform. My copy of JEdit is running on Windows XP. And although it is small in size on the download, one will need to install the JRE package from the Sun Microsystems website.</a> If you are running on a 56k Modem, it can be a long wait. Despite this, however, I'd recommend JEdit for web writers who would like to work with HTML using a fully featured, professional-like text editing software. I give JEdit a rating of 5/5, if only because it is a great text editing software.
