A 'members' system...

I'm would like to have a 'members' system on my site, whereby users can be able to create their own account, login and be able to have their own preferences for the site.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

As TomS says php and mysql probably offer you the best solution.

There is a lot of open source software out there and you could try out some of them to see what works and what doesn't.

A good place to start is:

Hopefully you will find what you are looking for amongst all those.
