ANWR facts

JoeFriday
since many of us are affected by high gas prices these days, I thought I'd take the opportunity to point out a few facts about drilling for oil in the Alaskan territory known as ANWR, in which Congress set aside 1.5 million acres in the coastal 1002 area for oil exploration and potential development

http://www.eskimo.com/~rarnold/anwr.htm

of particular interest is this information..

http://www.eskimo.com/~rarnold/the_facts.htm

Quote:
The total acreage of ANWR is 19.6 million acres. Energy exploration and production would occur on 2000 acres of the coastal plain, or just 0.01% of the total ANWR acreage.

For comparison:

The size of the average farm in South Dakota is 1400 acres.
The size of Washington’s Dulles Airport is 11,000 acres.
The size of the National Audubon Society’s Paul J. Rainey Wildlife Refuge, where the Society produced natural gas safely for 50 years, is 26,800 acres.
The size of the Michigan Audubon Society’s Bernard N. Baker Sanctuary, where the Society produced oil safely for 13 years, is 900 acres."

and see what the government has concluded about these questions:

Quote:
“There is only a six month supply of oil in ANWR, so it’s not worth it.”

“Energy exploration in ANWR would harm the caribou deer.”

“ANWR won’t create a significant amount of jobs.”

“The ‘BIG OIL’ industry is intensely lobbying Congress to open ANWR.”

“Energy exploration and production would devastate the environment.”

The US is already sporting 1/3 of the world's oil production, arent' they? I heard what you're debating on TV, but only caught one side of it. The negative side saying it's not worth it blah blah blah.

IMNSHO, anything we can do to stop giving money to terrorists and to stop our dependance on them is a step in the right direction. I believe, even if this single area won't produce much, there is a precedence to be set, allowing for the mining of oil all over the country in an effort to a) rid our dependance and b) use for a stepping stone to more perminant solutions.

Wholeheartedly agreed.
Biodiesel
Hmm, then what do you think of biodiesel as a fuel? Why exactly are we pushing for more drilling? The United States would be 100% energy independent if just the NE used biodiesel to heat their homes. Just the NE. Then of course we would face higher CO2 emissions, but we would save a bundle on car insurance!

Raising the gas efficiency standard would do more to make us less dependent on foreign oil then drilling in Alaska. I just wouldn’t make BIG OIL more money. And that would be a shame. Sad

A stepping stone to a more perminant solution? It would feed the junkie and pay the dealer. I think it would be yet another retreat from a solution.
