I am a science teacher at a small midwestern high school and I want to be able to post my classes' daily homework assignments on the web. That way they can link to it through the school's web site.

That's a good way to do things.
Also, you could install a forum or other software that would even let them turn it in online. (That might not be workable for several reasons, however, such as a possibility of cheating.)
