Velvet Elvis

Alistair
I have recently read a book by Rob Bell called Velvet Elvis - and before you think hang on put this in the literature section - the book is about what it means to be a Christian and part of the church.

I am wondering if anyone else has read it and if you agree with what he has to say. He has some interesting concepts like doctrines being like "springs" and not like "bricks" and that we are to engage in "binding and loosing" (basically deciding what is OK and what is not for our generation). Bell also talks about truth (God) being everywhere and we don't have to take it/Him with us, just find it/Him where-ever we go.

If you have read the book I would love your comments on what He is on about.

Rob is an incredibly smart man. I loved the book, and love his preaching. If you don't know all of the sermons from the church he is the teaching pator at (Mars Hill in MI) are online for free download. Theres also dvd messages called nooma which he is the teacher for, which are also amazing.

Ok, now that I'm done with blatantly plugging my old church and pastor, I love the book, espically the portion about questions. Ive always been told to ask alot of questions in school because thats how you really learn, but questions haven't been welcome in church, or at best they are tolerated only to a certain point, and once you hit that point its very obvious because then its either avoidence or answers which are suppose to be discussion enders like "because thats the way it is suppose to be" or "because God said so" or the ever popular "just have faith", as if faith and a search for the truth of God are seperate from each other.
