Would you really want to wait for Vista? I don't think that's a good idea since the final release date of Vista isn't even sure. Microsoft said that Vista would be shipping late 2006. However, they moved the release date to early 2007. I'm afraid that's a long time to waste.
You don't know how much an Operating System can change in only a year or two right? I suggest you take a look at Linux distros. Just take your pick. Or you might also want to try the yet-to-be-released Mac OS X Leopard.
I'm sure you haven't seen Linux's XGL and OS X's innovations as well. You'll be drooling when you see all those eye-candies that even a decent 5-year old PC could handle flawlessly.
Vista is rumered to be released early 2007. It will have Direct X 10, a 3D desktop, a lot more security like linux, IE7, Windows Media Player 11, and a lot more. But you will need a very good computer to run it. If you are looking for Vista features and have a old computer you should check out XGL it is for Linux and it works great.
