This deserves its own sticky topic. I wish I had more time to deal with it appropriately, but here are a descriptive page and some tools you should download and run. (For Windows.)

Wikipedia Spyware page:

Spybot:
http://security.kolla.de

AdAware:

SpywareBlaster:

Microsoft Anti-Spyware:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

HTAstop:

Hijack This:

ClamWin Antivirus:

Hope that it helps.

The best way to avoid spyware is don't use internet explorer (Opera is good, and so is Firefox). Also, don't install adware of any sort. Finally, make sure that you have a good virus scanner installed (NOT Norton Antivirus, as it causes problems for lots of people). I use AVG Free Edition, it's one of the best virus scanners you can get.

This should (hopefully) keep spyware off your computer

After your computer has so much spyware and crap on it, the computer is never the same again eg, runs slower, stability issues etc.

I would format my hard disk and start fresh. of course, back up all your files.

It's also an idea to have 2 partitions on your hard dish. 1 for windows and programmes and the other for documents, music and so on. that way, when you format your windows partition, it wont affect your files on the other.

After installation, install a firewall and anti-virus software, i use Trend Micro, it's got everything. Avoid Norton antivirus. Then patch your system up with service pack 2 and lastly undate your drivers.

Hope this helps.

i recently use spybot for my pc it realy works and fine..........

yeah u should do some spyware scans and get protected if not check the start up files
dule
as it was said, do a fresh install of winfows and then:

1. Use spyware serach program.
2. Use antivirus.
3. Use firewall.
4. When your browser says 'Do you want to install bla bla bla bla, CLICK YES' ALWAYS CLICK NO! This is 100% spyware unless if it is a plugin (macromedia flash or something), but u shouldn't install these this way anyway, but from offical websites.

Never install spyware or anything like that crap on your computer. Instead take a decent internet security program like symantec. Even Symantec offers Spyware these days

its difficult not to use certain programs or not to install any software... the best thing to do is to run spybot or any other anti-spyware tool regularly to clean up your system.
a lot depends on the speed of your processor and the operating system you are using. if you have installed a lot of programs then it would slow down the computer. remove any un-necessary programs. remove items from start up that you dont need all the time.
even after you have uninstalled many softwares the computer wont respont very fast. it would be a good idea to clean up your registry to remove any old entries.
these steps are potentially dangerous and so its better to find someone who knows about these stuff to help you with it. once you are used to it then u would be able to do it yourself.
but the best idea is to take necessary back up and then format and install the operating system again. nothing beats that.

Yeah I agree, the best thing to do would be to run spybot, or spysweeper. Get your system all cleaned up. Do a virus scan on it. Try also Start -> run , and type in msconfig , if you have xp. This will allow you to select what starts up with your computer. That would be the first steps.

ive always found norton to be very good

for example , i didnt have norton installed and clearly had a virus of some kind (cpu was at 100% constantly) i managed to download and run AVG which took ages (cause of the CPU load) and when it did tell me it had found something it told me it couldnt remove it.

Norton on the other hand got rid of it.

you can also try a program i found a little while ago called hitman pro 2.
It combines all the best spyware programs and automatically runs them and cleans out your system. The web address is

http://www.hitmanpro.nl/

Don't be scared when you get there. The site is in Danish? But the program is in english when you download it.

I currently use Win XP (thinking about replacing it), and IE.
I haven't had any inconveniences for years now.
The trick is:
In Internet Options / Security, I set the securty level for Internet to Low. So, no more ActiveX, not even a single JavaScript will run when I browse. Then, when I find a page I trust, like Yahoo! Mail, I just add the URL to the Trusted sites list. I am satisfied with the results.
Ah, and of course, use an antivirus software (I use AntiVir), and MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE IT REGULARLY!!!
This should be enough protection.

You could install Anti-SpyWare programs. However, those really didn't helped me at all. I resorted to manually removing the Registry keys and the files of spyware programs/components.

You couldn't really rely on AntiVirus and AntiSpyware software if your Windows OS is not up-to-date. You are running a very vulnerable system if you leave your Windows unpatched with the current security fixes. By the way, what is the OS that you are using?

Switch to Linux if you do not want to get bothered by unwanted programs/spyware/adware/viruses. Even crackers could hardly break into your system. Very Happy

K/Ubuntu rocks! Cool

Which you think is the best virusscanner i use NOD32 at the moment, i don't like Norton :/ And this one is good, and simple, no problems with it!

I use Trend Micro's PC-Cillin without any probs...it does not seem to be a memory hog like Norton. This software package also contains a firewall application as well.

I had spyware on my system from use of IE and used hijack this and spybot to rid myself of the offending programs.
