"Car for rookies"? What do you want? Training wheels? Laughing

Here's something that's easy to miss when considering a first car: because of your age and lack of experience, your parents' auto insurance premiums will already be increasing quite a bit (or, if you will be handling that yourself, your insurance premiums will be very high). Your choice of car will also have a BIG effect upon the insurance.

In particular, the following things will drive up the insurance rates (no pun intended) - some more than others:
  • New car instead of used
  • Anything that may be classified as a "sport car"
  • Anything that may be consider "sport" options
  • Cars that are popular targets of thieves
  • Not having anti-lock brakes
  • Not having air bags
  • Not having a security system that disables the car's ignition
  • Having expensive equipment installed, such as a sound system worth more than the car
  • Any existing damage that makes the car less safe to drive
Good luck, and stay safe!

Well, keep Traveller's points in mind.

But I don't know where you live (that affects the choices) but how about a Jeep Wrangler? Fairly cheap. Great off road ability. Lots of mods. I haven't a clue what the insurance rates would be.

Downsides - A bit rough, noisy, small (also an upside)

Ooooo.. Thanks traveller.
I never realised there was so muhc to take into concideration lol
Also, im aware that i wont be able to get insurance for a 4x4? is that correct?
My dad will be insureing it for the business, then officially employing me soi can drive it. I asshume this will work.

Thanks hobo, i'lltake a look at the car u mentioned. I live in a town in north east of england. We cant get a small car because if someone is out working with out van and my dad goes out to do a job, he wants a big car to be able to fit all his stuff in. but also small enough for me to drive.

Thanks.

Of that I am not certain. The main point, though, is that you keep in mind that many such factors affect the insurance, so be sure to check with the insurance company to find out what they do or don't allow, as well as the things that could help reduce your premiums.

I suppose ya'll have never looked to buy one of those: They're quite expensive. (Relitively speaking)
Here was the choice I came down to when buying my truck:
Jeep Grand Cherokee---85Kmi----'97----V8---All Options-----$7,200
Jeep Wrangler------------98kmi----'96----S6---Few Options---$10,500

As you can see, wranglers are the most expensive jeeps. (at least when bought used).
Personaly I'd recomend the jeep cherokee, jeep grand cherokee, or chevvy S10 (Blazer).
If a jeep, get the straight 6 (a very good engine, known for reliability and durability since WWII), or if a chevvy the 5.7L V8 (a very powerful engine known to last up to 300k mi.)

Great choice, but not usually cheep. They're a bit top-heavy, making them unstable at high speeds, but they're great vehicles; dependable, easy to work on/get parts for etc.

Best story for my wrangler, at Glamis Dunes, got roosted by a friend on a bike, peppered the entire front of the jeep. Drove for 25 minutes in the dunes and when we got out noticed a 'stream' of what was left of the water coming out of the radiator. Drove another 25 minutes back to find water, and within 4 minutes, was able to take the radiator cap off with no spray back. Added some leak sealant and water, been running ever since. (Yes, a straight six motor)

Actually, I have. I now have a 97 Cherokee Sport and have been looking for a used wrangler (as an addition, not replacement). Those numbers seem a bit off the average, but used cars vary a lot in equipment and condition. There also are a number of different wrangler versions that effect the price. I never really looked at the cost of used Grand Cherokees, but the original cost of a Grand Cherokee is so high, I wonder why the the resale is so low.

I also have heard good report about the straight 6, which is one of the reasons I went with it on the XJ. All I can say is that I have never had any engine issues and plenty of power for accelration, towing felled trees. Wink

Here's a decent site that list a bunch of used jeep vehicles

Never had the s-10 but my friends love it, for whatever that's worth.
