Recently bought the film Primer on DVD on a whim because it looked interesting and, more importantly, was in a sale.
For those of you who haven't heard of it the basic gist is that two inventors working out the back of a garage accidently discover that the machine they've been working on can allow them to travel back in time. So it's a time travel movie. And it was shot on $7000. And it's not awful. For a start there's only one true special effect in the movie and that only involves floating bits of paper. The rest of it is shot subtly without any action sequences or cliched plot arcs. The story is convuluted as hell: I've had to watch it three times now to get a proper understanding of the film but it does have a very definite narrative unlike other surrealist films that leave things "open for interpretation".
So there you go, Primer is definately one of my top 10 films now.
