Reuters Photoshopping Beirut pics

Saw this at LGF... sure looks Photoshopped to me. What the hell are they gaining by doing something like that?

Looks highly suspect, doesn't it. Do you have a link to Reuters that actual shows the pic? The Yahoo link gave errors and the reuters link is only text.
I guess I would have to see the pics on a legit site to even worry about it.

Reuters has sent out a picture kill on the photo, with the real photo (read: a different photo) attached:

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/060806/ids_photos_wl/r1119244085.jpg

That's the third picture kill I remember seeing in the past couple of weeks, although I can't remember the reason for the others (they all had to do with Lebanon, though). But as one of those blogs linked says, let's not start going wild with Loose Change-ism.

EDIT: Oh, reason given:

Reuters wrote:

They said on TV last night that Reuters had SIX HUNDRED photos possibly chopped by the same guy, a Lebanese citizen who's obviously hell-bent on spreading the same lies that are spreading around here.

Six hundred chops. Rolling Eyes I thought Dan Blather was stupid.

It all fits in with the lies about the civilian deaths in Qana and some other places where deaths were exagerated between 50 and 100%.

Luckely, there's enough tech savvy people out there that can spot and expose these blatent lies. Still makes you wonder how many haven't been caught.
bogger
Maybe, just MAYBE, it was done intentionally badly by reuters, so as to make the lebanese look bad.

of course, this is all conspiracy theory. Probably it was just reuters sensationalising so as to make buisiness.

This still doesn't make this war ok, it's just people making a mess of it.

S3nd K3ys, don't call anything anyone a liar unless you can prove it. it's called libel Wink

Sure, and why exactly would a well-known company risk their reputation by doing something this stupid to make lebanese look bad. Reuters isn't exactly a senzationalising company either. They just provide photographs and became victimized by their photographer/photoshopper. I can imagine that it wasn't discovered earlier as hundreds of photo's pass through there every day. You can't expect them to go over all that stuff with a magnifying glass.

Maybe not.

Yeah, because it worked out so well with Dan Blather and SEE B.S. didn't it? Rolling Eyes

People don't like being lied to by the press.

The only thing that will make the war OK is the end of it. And it's cleaning up a mess, not making one.

You need to brush up on your lawyer skills. In order for libel to be prosocutable, you must 'damage' that person's reputation. Considering the reputations of people here are not at risk, well, good luck with that. Wink
bogger
I would have to agree with you actually Code of ruinRazz. I was just theorising there.

It can still be libelious, even if they're not here, for their reputation can be tarnished more effectively by gossip behind their backs, than by a page 1 exclusive

and yet it happens every day, with us still buying the same papers, changing nothing Razz, I don't think anyone is going to boycott Reuters for this, so how could it damage them, unless it's done very often?

I don't know about YOU, but I will never give credance to ANYTHING Reuters reports on ever again. They will be dismissed just as Dan Blather was.

I really don't see how this would help preventing people from submitting fake photo's. Reuters is a generally respected company and like all companies things happen occasionally that shouldn't happen. Reuters is just as much victimized by this man as the readers of the different newspapers. Just because I get facts wrong sometimes doesn't mean my family never believes me again. I think it is a bit narrow-minded to boycott Reuters just because of some minor accident. It isn't exactly like they are still claiming the photograph to be real. They admitted it is fake and make it absolutely clear to everyone. To me that makes the impression of a company that still cares about quality and has the guts to step forward and say: Sorry, we were wrong!
bogger
I think, code, that he was just saying that to provoke me Razz
S3nd K3ys
Not at all bogger. I just think people WILL stop using Reuters as reliably as they did before this all came out. I KNOW I will be ignoring them from now on. There's plenty more fish in the sea.

Did you see the photo? If the crew at Reuters did NOT see the photo, I could understand, but I'm sure they are the ones that posted it. And it's an obvious fake for even an untrained eye.

I've a feeling (considering Reuter's continual bias and how quickly they pounced in the over-exagerated civilian deaths in Qana) that Reuters knew about this and published it anyway.
bogger
I think that we better take everything that s3nd k3ys says with a pinch of salt considering his bias, what with his profile picture until recently being:

and his "location" being: Defending Israels right to exist.

Tbh, I didn't really notice, as with most pictures, i just glanced at it, and read the caption.

I think you'll find reuters "pounce" on everything, that's their job, anyone can report, but reuters are always the 1st to do it

Unless you know the exact dead/injured rate, you cannot claim others figures to be exagerated. They provide an estimate or a predicted total and/or current count.

Back to the topic (Reuters Photoshopping Beirut pics NOT discussion on the actual war, bias of certain members etc), we now know that the image was photoshopped(edited), weve moved on slightly to how this situation has/will affect(ed) the repuation of Reuters (allowed as still rather on topic and discussion on this has so far been good).

I don't think this will have a very large affect on Reuters. People that use it as a source may be a bit more wearry of its images relating to the middle east but other than that, the content all still seems to be valid and other images are unlikely to have been changed in any other way than being touched up for clarity.
bogger
Aye, 1 mess up shouldn't really be that grevious for such a well known company, I think that, surely the newspapers who used the photos are partly to blame as well, because they would have seen it photoshopped, right?
Helios
I'm working with photoshop for 4 years. Yeah, that picture is fake.
bogger
Just to let people know, It has been agreed that that photo is fake,

the topic has moved on, we're now considering the repurcussions
Helios
EDIT: Reopened.

bogger, yeah, you're right.
I should've actually moved it... Confused

EDIT: continue your discussion.

Jihadis Playing Possum
Back in May 2002, we noted that the Israel Defense Forces had provided a reconnaissance video showing a staged funeral of a Palestinian at the "refugee camp" in Jenin, supposedly the site of an Israeli massacre. As Ha'aretz reported at the time:

IDF field intelligence chief, Colonel Miri Eisen, told reporters that the film shows someone who is supposedly dead--and on the way to burial--falling off his stretcher and then running away.

The same scam seems to be popping up in Lebanon--quite literally. Look at this July 30 photo, shot by the Associated Press's Lefteris Pitarakis:

Plainly this scene was staged for the benefit of the cameras, though it is important to note we know of no evidence that the photographer was complicit in the staging. It is, however, a clear example of how terrorist groups use journalists to spread their propaganda.

First Reuters got caught, now AP is faking photos of the so-called attrocities in Lebanon. Two of the more widely known news sources are no longer credible. Seriously, what do they hope to gain? They gotta know they're gonna get caught.

Call me ignorant, if you want to, but could you please link me, or tell me of something that proves they're fake?

in fact, the thing you quote has a CORRECTION!

you must have seen that, therefore, i put foreward this statement, it is your credibility that I do not believe in

I could care less about what you think of MY credibliity. All I'm doing is sharing what I've found. Again, if somebody has issue with my post, tell it to the source, not the messanger. (Agreed that that was incorrect after reading the link. Thanks for pointing it out. But who could blame people for being skeptical? Wink )

But on that note, more troubling news from Reuters...

Um, that's easy... because these cowardly terrorists are hiding there amung women and children because they're afraid to come out and fight face to face because they know they'll get their collective asses handed to them.

their asses handed to them by a puppet state of america.

Jumping to conclusions is fun and entertaining. And it brings out the best (and in your case) worst in people. Shocked

But it's still not as big a jump to a conclusion as you blindly accepting the false premise that hesbollah is morally correct in it's continued targeting and murdering of women and children for no reason. Wink

Bogger, as his post confirms, you've hit it on the head concerning Sendkeys. Usually it's best to ignore his blither unless you like banging your head against a door. He seems incapable of admitting he is wrong is is more interested in ranting than discussion. Blow him off once you've made you point. Like I'll ignore the worthless ramblings he'll respond to this post with.

Well it's not surprising that the 'other side' is trying to level the playing field a little, since Israel-US has a heavy advantage in media reporting in the west anyway. Both US and its clients are masters in media control and propaganda, where news agencies happily accepts official press releases like news stories and publish them without discrimination. This can be seen all to often.

This does not justify doctoring of photos of course, but it is hardly something to be surprised about, nor to go for some self-rightous ranting about it happening. How many times has the Bush-administration been caught manipulating the truth to make some kind of shady point? I leave that to anyone to try to remember. And think about all the times they were not caught...
