friendster issue

i was wondering how developers of the famous friendster website were able to design it....

i know php sessions but am still wondering how was it done, when you personalize your account, you can change the pics and the graphics , etc...

i guess they use template to do it.
every user just need to change the css to modify their pages.

They store all your user preferences into a database. Using session IDs, accounts systems, they can retrive the user preferences when you log in.
