Simulating the big bang.

Have any of you heard that over somwhere in or near europe there building this huge under ground tunnel that is in the shap of a circle and it will span the size of one of the countries there.

They are going to simulate what happened at the time of the big bang there going to use HUGE magnets to send an atom and a nutron at eachother and see what happens.

Personnal I don't think they should be doing this imagine if they can't stop whatever happens would we bemaking our own big bang here on earth? They don't even know what will happen what if some huge explosion happens *blows up the planet lol*. Like scientist didn't know what would happen when they split the atom like now there going to try and hit an atom with a nutron.

The atom and nutron might be different things but basically the same.

I think you might be talking about the particle accelerator. I think it's called cern. Currently the biggest particle accelerator is near chicago,IL, US at fermilab. I think what they do is speedup atoms and make them smash into eachother. This way we find what makes up protons and newtrons.
I think it's a great idea and cern might be able to come up with new finding that would be almost impossible at fermilab. Very Happy

Well no this is differen't I know about particle accelerators this will be the biggest man made stucture built.

cr3ativ3, there is nothing to worry about. It is most likely indeed about those particle accelerators. They are not creating a big bang, but are simulating the conditions after it, like what happened to the particles. And you need huge buildings/tunnels for those experiments.

Lol K I am not that worried about it I made it sound like that didn't I. But ya I am just stating like I hope those scientists know what there doing.

The conditions are quite different from the conditions of the first nuclear explosion.
Then the scientists did not know if the explosion would ignite the hydrogen (all of it) in the atmosphere or not. But the military still pushed for a detonation ( in open air i might add).

That was the biggest crime in history of mankind if you ask me.

Now the scientists knows much more about the inner workings of the atom. If there would be an unexpected chain reaction the scientist will drop the artificial containment field and the reaction would stop in a nano second.

I cant wait for a scientist to mess up and destroy the world! Im going to laugh so hard! Laughing But yeah dont worry about it, i dont think they will try that anytime soon.

They do...honest. I have a friend who works at Cern and he's a pretty smart guy.
The main purpose of these large particle accelerators is actually quite perverse sounding - to examine smaller and smaller bits of 'matter'.
Basically and perhaps over simplistically, they speed up atomic particles faster and faster and then smash them together. Remember that an atomic explosion requires quite a large amount of plutonium - the critical mass (unshielded) for a plutonium explosion is around 10Kg, whereas Cern smashes only very small numbers of particles together and the energy release is nothing comparible.
The 'harder' you smash the particles the more you split them into their components and one aim is to simulate conditions at the Big Bang. Cern is a LEP (Large Electron Positron) machine so it smashes electrons and positrons (their anti-matter equivalent) together. When matter and anti-matter particles collide they 'anihilate' each other and give off energy which very quickly 'recondenses into sub-atmic particles. This is what is thought to have happened at the BB and by studying the particles produced scientists can study the first instants after BB.
