Linux : How to make new Firefox the default browser

Hi

I downloaded the new firefox and extracted it to a directory
now i can browse using the new FF, but how to make it the default browser
ie. how to open new firefox when i click the web browser button

Please help

start firefox....... go to edit> preferences >

In general tab there is an option

Firefox should check at the time of start up that it is a defalut browser or not

press the check now button and make firefox the default browser....

i tried that, but when i press the button check now nothing happens
i hope this is bcoz default browser is firefox, but the older one

Just what button are you talking about, and on which desktop manager (KDE, Gnome, windowmaker, et cetera)? It may be that you just need to change the target of that button.
