Stone egg

Hey try this. I was very surprised with the result. Take an egg to your hand and try to crush it with your fingers. If your egg has no crack then I'm pretty sure you have not crushed it. It's not a joke...just try it!!!!

When you press the "pointy ends" of the egg with your fingers it is a very resilient construction.
But not at all as strong when you squeeze the area in between Confused

I tried to do that using both hands once (pressing the "pointy ends") and it definitely became... cracked Smile but I don`t think that you can do that with only your fingers.

Lyckily, it was a boiled egg...

Eggs are very resilient when you try and break them, exerting force on the pointy ends, but weak on the side. Scientists would say that creatures have evolved to lay eggs like this so that their young are protected. However, eggs don't balance on their sides, and usually rest on their sides in the nest. So aren’t they still very vulnerable?

Personally I think that eggs are not in the most resistant shape possible, but there is a simple reason. Any other shape would be very painful to lay, damage may even be caused to the mother. So eggs have to be smooth and rounded to be comftable for the mother.

That's my opinion anyway Razz

Someone told me (sorry I don't have the source) that the egg shape is a compromise between the sphere (very strong construction) and something that wont easily roll out of the nest.

I thought that a construction of more than one six-corner-constructions (like that from bees) is one of the most strong and flexible construction in the nature.

Ahh yes, that makes sense. Now you mention it I think I've heard that somewhere before.

Yes, but an egg shape is much more suited to purpose and is much stronger, and wouldn't roll out of the nest or be painful to lay. Shocked
